With the 420EX attached to a camera body equipped with a depth of field preview button, you can fire a modeling flash to check the shadow effects on the flash or the lighting balance in the wireless flash system before you take the picture.

Set the wireless selector to the <SLAVE> setting
- The flash coverage is set to 24mm automatically. However, when the modeling flash is fired, the flash coverage will suit the lens focal length
Check the camera and Speedlites setting for flash photography
Press the camera's depth of field preview button
- The modeling flash is fired at 70 Hz for about 1 sec.

Do not fie the modeling flash more than 10 times in succession. After 10 timer, allow the 420EX to cool for at least 10 minutes. This is to prevent overheating and deterioration of the flash head
