Connecting the HR10 DVD camcorder to a television/VCR

Solution

Playing Back on a TV Screen

Recording to a VCR

Playback

  1. Turn on the camcorder and the connected TV or VCR. See the diagrams below for connecting the camcorder to the TV depending on the type of TV.
  2. On a TV: Select as the video input the same terminal to which you connected the camcorder.
On a VCR: Set the input selector to the external video input (usually labeled LINE IN).
  3. Start the playback of the movies or still images.
  • Sound from the built-in speaker will be muted while the STV-100 Stereo Video Cable is connected to the camcorder.
  • We recommend powering the camcorder using the compact power adapter.
  • Refer also to the instruction manual of the connected TV.
  • You can play back discs recorded in HD quality not only on HDTVs but also on standard TVs. When you connect the camcorder to a TV using the STV-100 Stereo Video Cable, the video output will be converted to standard definition automatically, without having to change the [COMP.OUT] setting.
  • If you connect to a TV using the HDMI connection -connection type 2 - or the component video connection - connection type 1- you can enjoy the full resolution of high-definition TV.

Open the terminal cover to access the HDMI OUT and AV OUT terminals and/or the LCD panel to access the COMPONENT OUT terminal.

1. COMPONENT OUT Terminal
The component video terminal is for video only. When you use connection type do not forget the audio connections using the AV OUT terminal.
2. HDMI OUT Terminal
The HDMI OUT terminal offers a high-quality digital connection that combines audio and video in a single convenient cable. Use only HDMI cables marked with the HDMI logo.
3. AV OUT Terminal
Sound from the built-in speaker will be muted while the STV-100 Stereo Video Cable is connected to the camcorder.

When connecting a cable to the camcorder, make sure to align the triangle marks on the cable's connector and on the camcorder's terminal.

Connections for High Definition TV Sets (HDTV)

Connections for Standard Definition TV Sets

We recommend powering the camcorder from a household outlet.

In order to display the picture in full and in the correct aspect ratio, select the setting according to the type of television to which you will connect the camcorder.

In the [SYSTEM SETUP] menu select [TV TYPE] and select either [4:3 NORMAL TV] for sets with a 4:3 aspect ratio or [16:9 WIDE TV] for sets with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • The setting cannot be selected while the camcorder is connected to an HDTV using an HDMI cable.
  • When the TV type is set to [4:3 NORMAL TV], if you play back a recording made in Widescreen (16:9) the picture displayed on the LCD screen will be smaller than the full display area.
  • When the TV type is set to [4:3 NORMAL TV], still images cannot be captured from the playback scene.

For component output connections, from the [SYSTEM SETUP] menu, you can select the video specifications to use when connecting the camcorder to a high-definition TV using the component video connection.

  • [480i]: To use the 480i specification (standard definition).
  • [1080i/480i]: To use the full 1080i high definition specification when possible, or switch automatically to 480i specification when 1080i is not supported by the TV.
    - This setting will be unavailable while the camcorder is connected to an external device using an HDMI cable.

Recording to a VCR

You can copy your recordings by connecting the camcorder to a VCR or a digital video device. For a connection diagram showing how to connect the camcorder to a VCR see above.

  1. Set the camcorder to play movies () and load a recorded disc.

  2. Connected device: Load a blank cassette and set the device to record pause mode.

  3. This camcorder: Locate the scene you wish to copy and pause playback shortly before the scene.

  4. This camcorder: Start the movie playback.

  5. Connected device: Begin recording when the scene you wish to copy appears. Stop recording when copying is complete.

  6. This camcorder: Stop playback.

  • We recommend powering the camcorder from a household power outlet.
  • The quality of the edited tape will be lower than that of the original.
  • By default, the on-screen displays will be embedded in the output video signal, but you can select to turn off the screen displays or select the data that will be displayed instead.

About the HDMI Terminal

The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connection -connection type 2- is a convenient all-digital connection using a single cable for video and audio. When you connect the camcorder to an HDTV equipped with an HDMI terminal, you can enjoy video and audio playback at the highest quality.

  • The HDMI OUT terminal on the camcorder is for output only. Do not connect it to an HDMI output terminal on an external device, as this may damage the camcorder.
  • The HDMI connection will recognize automatically the highest resolution supported by the connected HDTV, and output the optimal video signal to ensure the best viewing experience. You can confirm the current specification of the video output by checking the [HDMI STATUS] menu option.
  • Correct operation cannot be guaranteed when connecting the camcorder to DVI monitors.
  • Some HDTVs have their HDCP digital content protection configured so as not to allow the playback of personal content (video recorded for personal uses). If you cannot play back the video recorded with this camcorder on your HDTV using the HDMI connection, try connecting the camcorder using the component video connection -connection type 1- instead.
  • There will be no video output from the AV OUT terminal or the COMPONENT terminal while the camcorder is connected to an external device using an cable. In such case, only audio will be output from the AV OUT terminal.
