How to process EOS 1Ds RAW image files.

Solution

How do I process RAW image files?

RAW image files may be downloaded to a Windows computer from the camera or a CF card reader. When downloading from the camera, you can use ZoomBrowser EX or File Viewer Utility. When using a card reader, you can also use Windows Explorer (Windows 98/2000/Me/XP) or Canon?s WIA driver via Microsoft?s Scanners and Cameras Wizard (Windows Me/XP only) as well as ZoomBrowser EX or File Viewer Utility.

RAW image files may be also be downloaded to a Macintosh computer from the camera or a CF card reader. With either method, you can use ImageBrowser or File Viewer Utility. If you are using OS 8.6~9.2, you can alternatively use the Canon Plug-in Module from within a compatible image-editing program such as Adobe Photoshop.

Although RAW images can be downloaded using any of these methods, we recommend using File Viewer Utility whenever possible to eliminate unnecessary work.

Once downloaded, RAW images can then be processed using the Canon File Viewer Utility. RAW image files may also be ?batch processed?, applying the same editing corrections and adjustments to each image, and saved directly to a folder on your hard drive.

Note
: The original RAW files are not altered in any way when doing batch processing. The conversion is a real time process, creating new, digitally altered images using your adjustments. These altered images are saved at a location you specify, leaving the original files untouched.

Windows 98, 2000 Me or XP:

1. If not using a CF card reader, see chapter 8 of your EOS-1Ds Software manual for Windows for the procedure for downloading images using ZoomBrowser EX. Alternatively, start the File Viewer Utility by clicking [Start], [Programs], [Canon Utilities], [File Viewer Utility].

2. When using a card reader, start the File Viewer Utility by clicking [Start], [Programs], [Canon Utilities], [File Viewer Utility].

Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2, Mac OS X

1. If not using a CF card reader, see chapter 6 of your EOS-1Ds Software manual for Macintosh for the procedure for downloading images using ImageBrowser. Alternatively, you can start the File Viewer Utility by clicking the [Canon Utilities] and [File Viewer Utility] folders on the Mac hard drive followed by the [Canon File Viewer Utility] icon.

2. When using a card reader, you can start the File Viewer Utility by clicking the [Canon Utilities] and [File Viewer Utility] folders on the Mac hard drive followed by the [Canon File Viewer Utility] icon.

Continue here for all operating systems:

3. On the left side of the screen, in the Select Image Folder display area, click on the folder containing the images you wish to process.

4. Select the thumbnail(s) for the image(s) that you wish to process. Multiple images can be selected by holding the CTRL (Windows) or Shift (Macintosh) key while clicking on additional thumbnails.

5. You may now make adjustments to digital exposure compensation (brightness), tone curve, white balance, and Color Matrix specification to be applied to each of the selected images (see pages 3-19 through 3-28 in the Software Instructions Manual for more detailed guidance).

6. You may also specify preferences (the Preferences button is second from the left on the toolbar) to be applied to all images during transfer. These preferences include transfer resolution, color depth (8 or 16 bits per color channel), sharpness adjustments, and thumbnail naming convention.

For Windows computers:

7. When all adjustments and preferences are set, click on [File], [Save file], [Convert and save in file]. The Save File dialog box allows you to select the file folder, file format for conversion (none, JPEG, TIFF), compression ratio (if JPEG is selected as format), and file renaming if desired. When you have made the appropriate selections, click [OK] to begin the batch conversion process.

For Macintosh computers:

7. When all adjustments and preferences are set, click the [Save File] button and select [Convert and save in file] from the menu that appears. The Save File dialog box allows you to select the file folder, file format for conversion (none, JPEG, TIFF), compression ratio (if JPEG is selected as format), and file renaming if desired. When you have made the appropriate selections, click [OK] to begin the batch conversion process.
