Troubleshooting USB Printing Issues

Windows 98 and Windows Me

Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and USB port of the computer. Reboot the computer with the printer's USB cable unattached and reconnect the cable once the computer has restarted.

Use the following troubleshooting checklist to establish USB communications between the printer and computer for Windows 98 and Windows Me (instructions for Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS below):

Ensure your printer is powered on (steady green light) and connected directly to the USB port on the computer.

Ensure the USB port is selected properly in the printer properties.

- Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar. Select Settings, and then click Printers. Click your right mouse button on the S200 icon, and then click Properties on the menu that appears. Click the Details tab at the top of the properties screen. The port listed in the "Print to the following port dialogue box" should be USBPRN01 S200.

- If USBPRN01 S200 is not listed or is listed as USBPRN01 Device not connected, click the down arrow to the right of the dialogue box to view the list of available ports. Select USBPRN01 S200 and then click the Apply button at the bottom of the window. If you were able to select USBPRN01 S200 as your printer port, click the General tab, and then click the Print test page button.

If USBPRN01 S200 is not listed or is listed as USBPRN01 Device not connected, check the status of the USB port in the Device Manager.

Ensure the USB port is functioning properly in the Device Manager.

- You can access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. At the bottom of the device list, click the [+] next to Universal Serial Bus Controller. Under this, you should have a line for a USBUniversal Host Controller and another line for a USB Root Hub. If either line does not appear or either line is marked with a red X or yellow (!), you will need to contact your computer manufacturer's technical support to have your USB driver properly configured.

- If you have an additional entry, such as Unknown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controller, the printer may be showing up this way because the driver was not properly loaded. Highlight Unknown Device and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.

Ensure the printer is showing up in the Device Manager properly.

- Access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controller and click the [+] next to it to expand it. Ensure the S200 is listed here, along with Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub. Ensure none of these devices have exclamation points or red X's.

- The printer may also show up under Other Devices in the Device Manager if the driver did not install correctly. Click the [+] next to Other Devices (if it exists) to expand the category. If you see the printer, highlight it and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.

- If there is no listing at all for the printer, try reseating the USB cable in the same or different USB port on the computer. Turn the printer off then on again. Try a different USB cable.

- The printer driver may not be installed correctly. Uninstall and re-install the printer driver.
