Procedure for checking what firmware version is installed on the camera.

Solution

How do I know if there is a firmware update for my Canon digital camera, or what version firmware I have on my camera?

Firmware updates are coded instructions that can be written into the program memory chips of the camera itself. These updates are normally limited in scope, and improve or correct how the camera performs certain functions. They do not change the specifications of the camera, and cannot modify the hardware (lens, CCD chips, sensors or switches). A firmware update can not make an older model camera equivalent to the model that "just came out".

All available firmware updates are contained on the BeBit web site (http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/BeBit-e.html). This web site is maintained by Canon, Incorporated, the parent company of all Canon companies in the world, and is the central location for all digital camera firmware updates (as well as a lot of good information about each model camera).

Specific instructions and information for performing the updates are located with the downloadable file. Be sure to read and understand all instructions before attempting to do the update (printing the instructions out is highly recommended). Not all models have firmware updates available. Firmware updates are also performed by the factory during the manufacturing process, so it is possible that your camera has already had the update incorporated. For many models, the firmware update information page contains a window in which you may type your camera's serial number to determine if the update was performed at the factory.

To determine what firmware version your camera has, you must use your computer to read the information contained in your camera's basic settings.*

-- For Windows, the TWAIN driver must be installed, and you must have a TWAIN-compliant graphics program installed (such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe, ArcSoft Photo Impressions, or ZoomBrowser EX).

-- For Macintosh, the Canon Digital Camera Photoshop plug-in module must be installed, and you must have a graphics program installed which is compatible with the plug-in module (such as Adobe Photoshop, ArcSoft Photo Impressions, or ImageBrowser).

Within the TWAIN driver or plug-in module is an option for "Camera Settings" when the computer is connected to and communicating with the camera. Selecting "Camera Settings" will display the current firmware version, in addition to other information contained within the camera's basic information.

* Note: On the EOS-1D and the EOS D-60, the firmware version can be read from the menu selections on the LCD monitor. See "Menu" in the index of the Instruction Manual for detailed information.
