Scanning Films with ScanGear MP in Advanced Mode

To scan 35 mm film strips and slides into an application program, you can start ScanGear CS from within the program. In the Advanced Mode, you can change the resolution and use various functions to scan, including color correction and filters.

  1. Place film or slide on the platen glass.

  2. Ensure that the machine is powered on.

  3. Start ScanGear MP from within the application program. (PhotoStudio is used in this example.)
    1. Click 'Start' and select ('All) Programs', followed by 'ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5' and 'PhotoStudio 5.5'.
    2. Click 'File' and select 'Acquire'. The ScanGear MP window will display.

  4. If ScanGear MP is in the Simple Mode, click the 'Advanced Mode' tab.

  5. From the Select Source drop-down, select the appropriate film type. (Negative Film for 35mm film strips and Positive Film for 35mm film slides.)

  6. Set Color Mode drop-down, select either 'Color' or 'Grayscale'.

  7. Click the 'Preview' button. Thumbnails of the frames will display.

Note: If the previewed image does not display correctly, adjust the position of the film in the Film Guide and click 'Preview' again.

  8. Place a check mark beside the frames you wish to scan.
A check mark automatically appears on the first frame. If you do not need to scan a frame, click the check mark to remove it.

  9. Set the Output Resolution and Output Size to a value that is appropriate for the image's ultimate use.

Select the resolution for scanned material. The higher the resolution (number), the more detail in your image; the lower the resolution (number), the less detail.

Select a resolution from the options displayed by clicking the button, or type a value in the 25-19200 dpi range (in 1 dpi increments).

  10. Click the 'Scan' button.

  11. After the scan is complete, click the close box to close ScanGear MP. The image will display in the application program.

  12. After you have finished scanning film, return the film guide back to the FAU protective sheet.
