Using the BJ Setup Utility

This utility was designed to replace the manual DIP switches present on some printers with a DOS-based software interface. The BJ Setup Utility should be used only with the following printers:

  • "200" series: BJC-210; BJC-240; BJC-250; BJC-251
  • "4000" series: BJC-4100; BJC-4200; BJC-4300; BJC-4302; BJC-4304; BJC-4400; BJC-4550
  • Portables: BJC-80; BJC-50

The BJ Setup Utility may be used to enable, disable, or change a large number of printer functions. Among these are the "Automatic Power ON" and "Automatic Power OFF" features as well as the printer emulation (BJ/LQ).

How to locate the BJ Setup Utility

Download the BJ SETUP utility .

After you download the utility to your hard drive, follow the instructions listed below:

  1. Locate the directory where you downloaded the utility and double-click the BJSETUP.EXE file to expand the contents of the file.
  2. Double-click Install.exe to run the installation program.
  3. A screen should appear titled "Installer for Canon BJ Printer Setup Utility"
  4. In the box labeled "Source drive and directory :" type the path where the Install.exe file is located.
  5. Click on OK to continue.
  6. Click OK once again to accept the target directory where the utility will be installed. It should read "C:\BJ"
  7. A screen should appear stating "Directory is not found. Create new?" Click on OK to continue.
  8. The screen should now read "Install is successful" Click OK to continue.

How to run the BJ Setup Utility

  1. In the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. Do one of the following:
  3. Type C:\BJ\BJSETUP to start the BJ Setup Utility.
  4. Iin Windows Explorer, double-click BJSETUP.EXE in the BJ directory.

How to enable, disable, and change some parameters in the BJ Setup Utility

***IMPORTANT*** Whatever changes need to be made in the BJ Setup Utility, before beginning, be sure that the printer is turned ON and is connected to the computer.

  1. Change printer emulation: in the upper left field named "Setting Mode", click on the line named "Setting Mode", select the needed emulation (BJ or LQ), click SEND at the top of the screen, then click OK. To exit the BJ Setup Utility, click EXIT at the top of the screen, then click OK.
  2. Enable Automatic Power OFF: in the main field named "Parameter Settings", click "Automatic Power OFF", click the desired time span (1/ 10/ 30/ 60 minutes), click SEND at the top of the screen, then click OK. To exit the BJ Setup Utility, click EXIT at the top of the screen, then click OK. Once back in Windows, make sure that the time setting in the printer driver properties under the Control tab matches that selected in the BJ Setup Utility.
  3. Enable Automatic Power ON: in the main field named "Parameter Settings", click "Automatic Power ON", click Enabled, click SEND at the top of the screen, then click OK. To exit the BJ Setup Utility, click EXIT at the top of the screen, then click OK. The majority of the settings in the BJ Setup Utility will only control the printer while printing from DOS. In Windows, you should use the provided Canon printer driver to select the necessary settings.
