Canon iPF BackGrounder was added into the printer driver after version 1.60 of the Leopard driver (OS X 10.5) to prevent the driver from continuing to send jobs to the printer despite the job being cancelled by someone pushing the [Stop] button on the printer.

Canon iPF BackGrounder acquires IP addresses from the computer and then sends them to the driver. The driver then sends them with the print job. However, since Leopard drivers were designed only for one IP address, if Canon iPF BackGrounder received multiple IP addresses from the computer and sent them to the driver, the driver would then become confused, and, as a result, cause various applications to crash when trying to print.

All of our current iPF printer drivers are in the process of being updated for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). The new drivers will include a newer version of Canon iPF BackGrounder, which resolves the problem involving multiple IP addresses and various applications crashing.

As a temporary measure, to insure that the latest version of iPF Backgrounder is installed, please install the driver for the iPF650/750 series printer after your current printer driver is installed.
