Whenever you set the power switch to < ON /
 > or < OFF >, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit operates to automatically shake off the dust on the front of the sensor. Normally, you need not pay attention to this operation. However, you can execute the sensor cleaning at anytime as well as disable it.
1. Turn the camera's power switch to <
> (Quick Control Dial).
2. Press the < MENU > button to bring up the menu.
3. Turn the < Main Dial > to select the [
 ].
4. Select the Sensor Cleaning settings.
4-1. Turn the < Quick Control Dial > to select [Sensor cleaning] then press < SET > button.
4-2. Turn the < Quick Control Dial > to select [Clean now] then press < SET > button.
5. Select [OK] from the screen that appears, then press < SET > button.
The screen will indicate that the sensor is being cleaned.
6. Press the < MENU > button and turn off the display on the LCD monitor.
IMPORTANT
About smear adhering to the front of the sensor
Besides dust entering the camera from outside, in rare cases lubricant from the camera's parts may adhere to the front of the sensor. In case visible spots still remain after the automatic sensor cleaning, having the sensor cleaned by a Canon Service Center is recommended.
REFERENCE
- During the sensor cleaning, the shutter will make three shutter-release sounds. The camera is not taking pictures.
- For best results, do the sensor cleaning while the camera bottom is placed on a table or other flat surface.
- Even if you repeat the sensor cleaning, the result will not improve that much. Right after the sensor cleaning is finished, the [Clean now] option will remain disabled temporarily.
This completes the process of cleaning the sensor immediately.
