Description

Common image quality concerns with camcorders

Solution

Problem:  A vertical smear appears in the video.

Cause:     Any bright point of light can potentially cause smear, such as street lights and car headlights or if the camera is shooting footage of a camera flash, or even the sun.

Solution:

1.  Lower the exposure enough that the brightness of the lights eliminate smearing.

2.  Controlled lighting can eliminate all traces of smear.

Problem:  Objects seem to be leaning in the video.

Cause:     With horizontal camera motion, vertical objects can look like they’re leaning one way or the other depending on which way the camera was moving.

Solution:

1.  Change to a faster frame rate.

2.  Try slowing down your pan.

Problem:  The video looks stretched or rubbery.

Cause:     Problem occurs in situations where the camcorder is subject to vibration or sudden motion.

Solution:

1.  Try recording using a faster frame rate.

2.  Mount the camcorder to a tripod.

Problem:  Black or dark Bands occur in the video during playback.

Cause:     Black or dark bands occurs under circumstances where there’s a flash of light that significantly alters the exposure – a camera flash, a bolt of lightning, fireworks, etc.

Solution:

1.  Avoid scenarios where flash photography is taking place (such as a wedding, a press conference, a red-carpet premiere, etc).

2.  Be very cautious about shooting under fluorescent lighting. Turn off the offending lights and substitute in your own  high-frequency or constant-source lighting.
