If lines are missing or if horizontal white streaks appear when you print the nozzle check pattern, you can clean the print head.
Cleaning the print head consumes ink, so do this only when necessary.
Clean the print head

Press the Maintenance 
button repeatedly until H 
displays.

Press the Color or Black button. The printer starts the cleaning process.
Don't perform any other operations until the cleaning finishes. This takes 1 to 2 minutes, then the LED returns to copy standby mode.

Print the nozzle check pattern to see if print quality is improved.
If print quality doesn't improve
You can clean the print head up to two times. If the quality isn't better after that, you can do a print head deep clean.
