Your battery may not charge or hold a charge under the following conditions:

1. You are using an exhausted, incompatible, or generic battery.

• Battery capacity decreases over time and through repeated usage. When decreased usage time between charges becomes significant, it is time to replace the battery.
• Use only genuine Canon battery packs designed for your camcorder. Canon shall not be liable for any damage to this product and/or accidents such as fire, etc., caused by the malfunction of non-genuine Canon accessories (e.g., a leakage and/or explosion of a battery pack). 

     2.  The temperature outside or inside is low.

• We recommend charging the battery pack in temperatures between 32 degrees F and 104 degrees F.
• When the battery is exposed to cold temperatures its usage becomes dramatically reduced and it may cease to function.  If this happens, place the battery in your pocket for a short time to warm it, and then re-insert it into your camcorder.

     3.  The battery pack was not charged correctly and needs to be recharged.

• Turn off the camcorder.
• Attach the battery pack.
• Press the battery pack softly into the battery attachment unit and slide it up until it clicks in place.
• Connect the power cord to the compact power adapter.
• Plug the power cord into a power outlet.
• Connect the compact power adapter to the camcorder's DC IN terminal.
• The CHG (charge) indicator starts flashing.  The indicator will stay on when the charging is completed.
• Once the battery pack is fully charged:
  - Disconnect the compact power adapter from the camcorder.
  - Unplug the power cord from the power outlet and the compact power adapter.

     Note:  The CHG (charge) indicator also serves as a rough estimate of the charge status.

• Continuously on:  Battery pack fully charged.
• Two quick flashes at 1-second intervals: Battery pack at least 50% charged.
• One flash at 1-second intervals: Battery pack less than 50% charged.

     Note:  The charge indicator flashes rapidly, one flash a .5-second intervals, indicates that charging has stopped because the compact power adapter or battery pack is faulty.

     Note:  Battery pack becomes hot with use and may not charge. When the battery pack is outside the charging temperature range, the CHG (charge) indicator will flash irregularly. The charging will start once the battery pack temperature is below 104 degrees F.

     4.  The compact power adapter or camcorder is defective.

• Consult your nearest Canon Dealer or a Canon Service Center.

Follow these steps for testing the compact power adapter, battery pack and camcorder:

1. Turn your camcorder off.
2. Remove the batery pack from your camcorder, and then connect the compact power adapter to your camcorder.
3. Turn your camcorder on, and then determine which statement below best applies:

• If the camcorder does not come on with the compact power adapter connected, the compact power adapter is defective.
• If the camcorder stays on while connected to the compact power adapter, then the battery pack is exhausted and needs to be replaced.
• If the camcorder turns off by itself regardless of whether the battery pack or compact power adapter is connected, the camcorder requires service.

     Note:  For all service requests concerning power issues we will need you to send your camcorder, battery pack, compact power adapter and power cord for testing.
