Learn what to do when you have trouble printing after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

Solution

Check bidirectional support

If the printer driver was installed before you upgraded to Windows 8.1, you may get a message that the computer cannot communicate with the printer.
  1. At the computer, hold down the Windows key and press x.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Devices and printers.
  4. Right-click the Canon printer, and then select Printer properties
  5. Select the Ports tab.
  6. Confirm that Enable bidirectional support is checked. If you are able to check it, or it is already checked, select Apply -> OK and attempt to print again. If Enable bidirectional support is greyed out, you need to check the printer port setting.

Check the printer port

  1. In the printer ports tab, check the selected printer port.
  2. For networked printers the checked printer port should be CNBJNP and the description should be Canon BJ Network Port. Printers connected via USB show USBnnn (where n is a number) for the port and Virtual Printer Port for USB as the description.
  3. If the correct driver for your connection method is not selected, and it appears in the list, select the checkbox and click Apply. If the driver does not appear in the list, you need to reinstall it.
  4. Select OK
  5. Attempt to print again.

Reinstall the printer driver

You may want to visit the the Device & Downloads page on the Canon website and start the printer driver download before continuing with these steps.
  1. At the computer, hold down the Windows key and press x.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. From the program list, on Programs and Features window, select "Canon XXX MP Drivers" (where "XXX" is your model name) and then click Uninstall.
  5. Download and install the printer driver.
