Understand and resolve Alarm Lamp errors on your PIXMA iP7220 printer
 

Solution

Before you begin

When a printer error occurs, the alarm lamp flashes in one of two ways:

Repeatedly orange 
The number of flashes indicates the type of error that has occurred.
Count the flashes and refer to Table 1 below to learn how to correct the error.

 
Alternately orange
If the power and alarm lamps flash alternately, it may be an error that requires your printer to be serviced.
Make note of the flashes and refer to Table 2 below.

Flashes Error Action

No flashes

The printer does not support the paper size you specified.  
Select the Resume / Cancel button, specify the proper paper size, then print again.
 

Two flashes

The printer is out of paper or isn't feeding correctly, or the disc tray isn't attached.

Reload paper in the cassette and select the Resume / Cancel button on the printer.
 

When printing on printable discs (BD/DVD/CD, etc.), use the disc tray supplied with this printer ("J" is on the upper side). Place a printable disc on the disc tray, attach the to the printer, then select the Resume / Cancel button.
 

Three flashes

The paper may be jammed.

Remove the jammed paper, reload paper properly, then select the Resume / Cancel button on the printer.

Four flashes

An ink tank isn't installed, isn't installed properly, or may have run out.

If an ink tank is installed but the lamp isn't lit, reinstall the ink tank. 
If an ink tank is flashing, the ink may have run out and needs to be replaced.

If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, select the printer's Resume / Cancel button with the ink tank installed. Replace the ink tank after printing. The printer may be damaged if printing continues under the ink out condition

Five flashes

The print head may be damaged.

Service is required

Six flashes

A certain period of time has elapsed while disc label printing is in progress, or the inner cover (the cover of the disc tray) is opened or closed.

If a certain period of time has elapsed while disc label printing is in progress, the printer stops initializing. Select the Resume / Cancel button and try the operation again following the on-screen instructions.


If the inner cover is open while printing other than the disc label printing in progress, close the inner cover, then select the Resume / Cancel button.

If the inner cover is closed when you start to print the disc label, open the inner cover, then select the Resume / Cancel button on the printer. When you start to print on the paper, close the inner cover, then select the Resume / Cancel button on the printer. Don't open or close the inner cover while printing is in progress, since this can damage the printer.
 

Seven flashes

An ink tank isn't installed correctly.

Some ink tanks are not installed correctly. Those ink tanks will be flashing.

More than one ink tank of the same color is installed. Those ink tanks will be flashing.
 
Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions.
 

Eight flashes

The ink absorber is almost full.

The printer has a built-in ink absorber to hold the ink used during print head cleaning.

Select the printer's Resume / Cancel button to continue printing.  Service is required.

Ten flashes

The printer can't perform duplex printing.

The size of paper may not be compatible with automatic duplex printing. The sizes of media suitable for auto duplex printing are A4, Letter, A5, and B5. Make sure that the size of the paper loaded in the printer is correct. Select the Resume / Cancel button to eject the paper and restart printing on the front side of the next paper. The reverse side of the ejected sheet will not be printed.

Eleven flashes

The automatic print head alignment failed

Print head nozzles are clogged. Select the Resume / Cancel button to dismiss the error, and print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the print head.


Paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded in the cassette (lower). Select the Resume / Cancel button to dismiss the error, then load one sheet of A4/Letter-sized Canon Matte Photo Paper MP-101 with the printing side (whiter side) facing UP.

The paper output slot is exposed to strong light. Select the Resume / Cancel button to dismiss the error, and then adjust your operating environment and/or the position of the printer so that the paper output slot isn't exposed directly to strong light.

Turn off the machine and perform Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours.
If the problem continues after you align the print head again, select the Resume / Cancel button to dismiss the error, and perform Manual Print Head Alignment.
 

Twelve flashes

Cannot print the content from CREATIVE PARK PREMIUM.

You cannot print the content from CREATIVE PARK PREMIUM.

When you print the content from CREATIVE PARK PREMIUM, confirm the message on the computer screen, make sure that genuine Canon ink tanks are installed properly for all colors, then start printing again.
 

Thirteen flashes

The ink level cannot be detected.
(The lamp on the ink tank flashes.)

Replace the ink tank and close the top cover.
 

Printing with an ink tank that was once empty may damage the printer.
 
To continue to print in this condition, disable the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Select and hold the printer's Resume / Cancel button for at least 5 seconds, then release it.

Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any machine malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks.

 If the function for detecting the remaining ink level is disabled, the ink tank is displayed in gray on the printer status monitor.
 

Fourteen flashes

The ink tank cannot be recognized. The ink tank isn't installed properly or isn't compatible with this printer.
Install the appropriate ink tank.
 
If you want to cancel printing, select Resume / Cancel on the printer.
 

Fifteen flashes

An ink tank cannot be recognized. 
The lamp on that ink tank will be off.

Replace the ink tank.

Sixteen flashes

The ink has run out. The lamp on the ink tank will flash.

Replace the ink tank. 

To continue to print in this condition, release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Select and hold the printer's Resume / Cancel button for at least 5 seconds, then release it.

 If the function for detecting the remaining ink level is disabled, the ink tank is displayed in gray on the printer status monitor.

Two flashes

There may be a paper jam, or there is still protective material inside the printer.

Cancel printing, and turn off the printer. Clear the jammed paper or material that prevents the print head holder from moving, and turn the printer on again.

Three flashes

There may be an object placed in front of the printer.
If any object is in front of the printer, remove it.

Turn off the printer, and unplug the power cord of the printer from the power supply.
 
Plug the printer back in and turn the printer back on.
 
If the problem isn't resolved, service is required.

Ten flashes

 

Turn off the printer, and unplug the power cord of the printer from the power supply.
Service is required.

Turn off the printer, and unplug the power cord of the printer from the power supply.
 
Plug the printer back in and turn the printer back on.
