Flashing USB

Solution

A flashing USB symbol appears on the camcorder's LCD in situations where the computer does not recognize the USB connection.  Following some simple troubleshoot steps can quickly pin point the source of the problem and lead to a speedy solution.  Follow the steps below:

  • Are you using the USB cable that came with the camcorder?
  • Is the USB cable securely attached to the camcorder and computer?
  • Are you using the compact power adapter that came with the camcorder?
  • Is the compact power adapter securely attached to the camcorder and an active wall outlet or power strip?
  • Check the camcorder's [USB SETTING]  to ensure the camcorder is not set to [DVD BURNER]*.
  • Try moving the camcorder to a different USB port on the computer.
  • Reboot the computer.
  • Close down all applications that may be interfering with the connection.
  • Disconnect all USB devices from the computer except the keyboard and mouse, then retry the connection.
  • Check Device Manager to ensure it recognizes the device with no errors or warnings.
    • The camcorder will be listed under Disk Drives as CANON VIDEO CAMERA USB DEVICE and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers as Mass Storage Device.
  • Test the USB port on the computer by connecting a different USB device.
    • When testing the USB port on the computer, if the other USB device does not operate then the issue is being caused by the computer.
    • When testing the USB port on the computer, if the other device operates, the camcorder's USB cable may need to be replaced or the camcorder serviced.
  • Check with your System Administrator for network policies that restrict USB Drives on network computers.
  • If the computer is connected to a network, try disconnecting the camcorder from the network and connect the camcorder to a computer not on a network.

*Not all models offer this feature.

Notes:

  • Failure to properly disconnect the camcorder from your computer may result in loss of data.  Always remember before disconnecting the USB cable, use the Safety Remove Hardware icon in the System Tray to end the connection.
  • When you plug in the camcorder to your computer, the computer should load and then configure the USB device automatically without ever requesting a device driver.
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating Systems already contain appropriate drivers to recognize the USB connection from the camcorder.
  • Connection through a USB Hub is not supported.
  • When camcorders are connected to computers on a network, mapped drives may cause connection issues.  Contact your System Administrator.
