Learn how to resolve the "Printer is offline" message on a PIXMA MG5420 or MG5422.

Solution

If you try to print and see a message that the printer is offline, here are some things to check.
  • Make sure that the printer is plugged in and powered on.
    Note If you have a Mac®, open the IJ Printer Utility, select Power Settings from the pop-up menu, then select Auto Power.
    Tip You can also go to the printer driver setup window and adjust the Auto Power settings. This allows you to turn the printer on when you send a print job.
     

  • Make sure that the printer and computer are connected to the same network.
    To verify this, print out the network settings and check the SSID (network name). Then check the network name for Windows or check the network name for Mac to make sure it's the same one your printer is connected to.
     

  • If possible, move the printer closer to the router. If the printer is far from the router, the signal strength may be low.
    To check signal strength, print out the network settings. The higher the percentage, the stronger the signal.
     

  • If you use a Windows PC, is the "Use Printer Offline" option enabled? To check, follow these steps:

    1. Hold down the Windows  key on the keyboard and type the letter R. This opens a Run box.

    2. In the Run box, type control printers and select OK.

    3. Right-click on the icon for your printer, then select See what's printing.

    4. Select the Printer menu, then remove the check from Use Printer Offline.

      Check mark shown to the left of Use Printer Offline. This needs to be un-selected.

    5. Try to print again.



If this doesn't resolve the problem

  • Make sure you sent the print job to the correct printer.
    If you send the print job is to a printer that's no longer connected to the computer, you may see this error:

    The printer is offline. Check that the printer is connected and powered on.

    If you send the print job to the correct (connected) printer, you will see this:

  • You may need to power cycle the printer and wireless router to restore network communication.
