In certain cases you may need to remove, then reseat or replace the print head.
Follow these steps to remove the print head. Then follow the instructions further down on this page to reseat or replace it.
Remove the print head
- Make sure the printer power is ON.
- If the paper output tray isn't open, press the open button (A) on the front right side of the printer to open it.
- Lift the front cover. The print head holder will move to the ink tank replacement position.

- Push the tab (B) on the ink tank you want to remove. Lift up on the side that has a tab, then pull straight back to remove the tank.

- Repeat to remove the rest of the ink tanks (see image slide show below).
The image below shows a PIXMA MG-series printer; however, the steps are the same for your PIXMA iP7220.

- After you remove the ink tanks, press and hold the Resume / Cancel button until the carriage moves to the right then back towards the center. Then release the button.
- Open the the inner cover (C) and push it down all the way to the bottom.

- Pull the head set lever towards you. You may find resistance when the bottom of the lever hits the back of the front edge. The lever will move forward as it slides above that front edge.

- Use your fingertips to grab the top of the center tab and pull out the print head. The print head drops face down as you pull it out of the machine.

Replace or reseat the print head
- If the print head is new, remove it from the packaging.
- Hold the center tab of the replacement head with the front of the print head facing down (so you can see the green circuit board). Insert the two tabs on the front bottom corners into the rails on either side of the print head holder.

- Slide the replacement print head into the machine. (As the print head slides in, it moves to an upright position.)

- When the print head is seated, push the head set lever towards the back of the machine.

- Reinsert the ink tanks into their proper slots (see image slide show below).
The image below shows a PIXMA MG-series printer; however, the steps are the same for your PIXMA iP7220.

Insert the front end of the ink tank into the print head at a slant. Make sure the position of the ink tank matches the label.

Press on the top of the ink tank until it snaps firmly into place. Make sure that the ink lamp lights up red.

- Close the inner cover and the top cover. The printer reinitializes and you are ready to print.
