Resolve Error When Alarm Lamp Flashes Orange - PIXMA iP4500

Description

Understand and resolve the alarm light error on your PIXMA iP4500 printer.

Solution

When an error occurs you will see flashing lights on your printer panel. Based on the error, a support code (error number) and a message may also display on your computer screen.

The light(s) on your printer panel may flash in two ways.

  • Repeatedly orange: If so, count the number of flashes and refer to Table 1 below.

  • Alternately between green and orange: If so, count the number of flashes and refer to the Table 2 below.

Two (2)
 

Printer is out of paper.

Paper doesn't feed.

  • Reload paper in the rear tray or cassette and tapRESUME/CANCEL.

Three (3)
 

Paper output tray is closed.

Paper jam.

  • If the paper output tray is closed, open it. The printer resumes printing.

  • If opening the paper output tray doesn't resolve the problem, or if the tray was open to begin with, the paper may be jammed. Remove the jammed paper, reload paper properly in the printer, and then tap RESUME/CANCEL.


Four (4)
 

Ink tank isn't installed properly.

Ink may have run out.

  • If the lamp on the ink tank isn't lit, the ink tank may not be installed properly.

  • Install an appropriate ink tank.

  • If the lamp on the ink tank is flashing, ink may have run out.

  • Replacing the ink tank is recommended.

  • Tap RESUME/CANCEL if you want to continue printing with the ink tank installed. Ink tank replacement is recommended after printing. The printer may be damaged if you continue to print under the ink out condition.


Five (5)
 

Print head isn't installed.

Print head is defective.

  • Follow the directions given in your setup sheet to install the print head.

  • If the print head is already installed, remove the print head once and then reinstall it.

  • If the error still isn't resolved, the print head may be damaged.

Six (6)
 

Inner cover is open.
  • Close the inner cover, then tap RESUME/CANCEL on the printer.

     Do not open or close the inner cover while printing is in progress, as this can damage the printer.

Seven (7)
 

Ink tank isn't installed in the correct position.

  • The lamps on the ink tanks flash, more than one ink tanks of the same color are installed.

 Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions.


Eight (8)
 

Ink absorber is almost full.
  • The printer has a built-in ink absorber to hold the ink used during print head cleaning, for example.

  • Eight flashes indicates that the ink absorber is nearly full.

  • Tap RESUME/CANCEL to cancel the error so you can continue printing.

 Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the ink absorber becomes completely full, printing cannot be performed until the ink absorber is replaced.

Nine (9)
 

No response from connected digital camera or video camcorder.

Connected digital camera or video camcorder isn't compatible with this printer.

  • Disconnect the USB cable connecting the printer and the device, and then reconnect it.

  • Select PictBridge compliant print mode on the device before connecting it to the printer. You may also have to turn on the camera or select play mode manually after connecting the device to the printer. Perform necessary operations according your device's instruction manual before reconnecting it to the printer.

  • If the error is still not resolved, there is a possibility that the digital camera or digital video camcorder isn't supported by this printer. Only PictBridge compliant devices can be connected to the printer for direct printing.

Ten (10)
 
Cannot perform duplex printing.
  • The size of paper may not be compatible with automatic duplex printing. The sizes of media suitable for auto duplex printing are A4, Letter, A5, and 5" x 7". If you tap RESUME/CANCEL, the paper will eject and restart printing from the front side of the next paper. The reverse side of the ejected sheet will not be printed.


Eleven (11)
 

Automatic print head alignment failed.
  • Print head nozzles are clogged.

  • Tap RESUME/CANCEL to dismiss the error, and print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the print head.

  • Paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded in the Rear Tray.

  • Tap RESUME/CANCEL on the printer to dismiss the error, then load two sheets of A4/Letter-sized Canon Matte Photo Paper MP-101 with the printing side (whiter side) facing up in the rear tray.

  • Automatic print head alignment cannot be performed using paper from the cassette. For automatic print head alignment, always load paper in the rear tray.

  • The paper output slot is exposed to strong light.

  • Tap RESUME/CANCEL to dismiss the error, and then adjust your set up and/or the position of the printer so that the paper output slot isn't exposed directly to strong light.

 After carrying out the above measures, if the problem continues after aligning the print head again, tap the RESUME/CANCEL to dismiss the error, and then perform manual print head alignment.


Thirteen (13)
 

Ink level cannot be detected.
  • If the lamp on the ink tank flashes, the remaining ink level cannot be correctly detected.

  • Replace the ink tank and close the top cover.

  • If you want to continue printing, turn of the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.

     Printing with an ink tank that was once empty may damage the printer.

 The remaining ink level function is stored in the printer's memory from now on. Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any printer malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks.

 If the function for detecting the ink level is disabled, the ink tank is displayed in gray on the printer status monitor (Windows) and Canon IJ Printer Utility (Macintosh®).

Fourteen (14)

Ink tank cannot be recognized.
  • If the lamp on the ink tank is off, the ink tank isn't compatible with this printer.

  • Install an appropriate ink tank.


Fifteen (15)
 

Ink tank cannot be recognized.
  • If the lamp on the ink tank is off, an Ink tank error has occurred.

  • Replace the ink tank.


Sixteen (16)
 

Ink has run out.

  • Replace the ink tank and close the top cover.

  • If you want to continue printing, turn of the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.

     Printing under the current condition may damage the printer.

 The remaining ink level function is stored in the printer's memory from now on. Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any printer malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks.

 If the function for detecting the ink level is disabled, the ink tank is displayed in gray on the printer status monitor (Windows) and Canon IJ Printer Utility (Macintosh).


Nineteen (19)

 

An unsupported USB hub is connected. Remove the hub.
  • If a PictBridge compliant device is connected via a USB hub, remove the hub and connect it directly to the printer.

  • Disconnect the printer cable from the printer, turn the printer off, and then unplug the printer from the power supply. Plug the printer back in and turn the printer back on after leaving it for a while.
    If the error does not clear, the printer may need to be reapired or replaced.
