Flashing Lights on a PIXMA MG2420, MG2520

Description

Find out how to interpret and resolve the flashing lights on your PIXMA MG2420 or MG2520.

Solution

When a printer error occurs, a support code (error number) and a message display on the computer screen. In addition, the lamp(s) flash.


The lamps flash in one of two ways

  • Repeatedly orange - see Table 1 below.

  • Alternately green then orange - see Table 2 below. (Theses errors are generally unrecoverable and indicate that the printer may require service.)

Note If the error isn't resolved, service is required.‚Äč

  1. Remove the jammed paper and reload the paper correctly.

4 flashes Is the FINE cartridge is properly installed?
  1. Open the cover and push the cartridge completely up.
  2. Confirm that the cartridge properly seated and close the cover.
  3. If necessary, remove the cartridges and reinstall them.

5 flashes The FINE cartridge isn't installed.
Install the ink cartridge.

Appropriate FINE cartridge isn't installed.
Install the appropriate ink cartridge.

Appropriate ink cartridge isn't installed.
Printing can't be executed because the ink cartridge isn't compatible with the machine.
  1. If you want to cancel printing, press the Stop button.
  2. Install the appropriate ink cartridge.

8 flashes The ink absorber is almost full.
Press the Black or Color button to continue printing.

9 flashes The protective material for the ink cartridge or the tape remains attached. Check the inside of the machine. If the protective material or the tape is still attached, remove it. 1890
11 flashes Specialty paper is too wide.

Press the Stop button to cancel printing. Change the media type or paper size setting, then print again.

Correct media settings:
  • Photo Paper Plus Glossy IISet the paper size to 4"x6" 10x15cm (Windows)/4 x 6 (Mac®), or 5"x7" 13x18cm (Windows)/5 x 7 (Mac).
  • Glossy Photo PaperSet the paper size to 4"x6" 10x15cm (Windows)/4 x 6 (Mac).
  • Envelope: Set the paper size to Envelope Com 10 (Windows)/Envelope #10 (Mac) or Envelope DL (Windows/Mac).

12 flashes Premium Contents print error.
  1. If you use CREATIVE PARK PREMIUM, confirm the message on the computer screen.
  2. Make sure that genuine Canon FINE cartridges are properly installed. 
  3. Restart the print job.

13 flashes The ink may have run out.
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level can't be correctly detected.
  • To continue printing without this function, press the machine's Stop button for at least 5 seconds.
  • Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities.
  • Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition.

14 flashes The ink cartridge can't be recognized.
Printing can't be performed because the ink cartridge isn't properly installed or isn't compatible with the machine.
  1. If you want to cancel printing, press the Stop button.
  2. Install the appropriate ink cartridge.

15 flashes The FINE cartridge can't be recognized.
Replace the ink cartridge.

16 flashes The ink has run out.
  1. Replace the ink cartridge and close the cover.
  2. If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the Stop button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Printing can continue under the ink out condition.The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.
  3. Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. Note that the resulting print quality may not be satisfactory if printing is continued under the ink out condition.

    Caution Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine. The machine may not print properly if you touch it.

Printer error has occurred.

Remove foreign material, if any, from the feeding area.

6 flashes

Printer error has occurred.

  1. Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord from the power supply.
  2. Plug the machine in and turn it back on.

7 flashes

Ink absorber full.

  1. Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord from the power supply.
  2. Plug the machine in and turn it back on.

Print head error has occurred.

Replace the empty ink cartridge with the one containing ink. If the error isn't resolved, service is required.
