LCD Messages
Below is a list of messages that are displayed on the LCD when a problem occurs. Check the cause of the error and take corrective actions according to the list.
Message | Cause | Action |
AUTO REDIAL | The machine is waiting to redial the recipient's number because the line was busy or the recipient did not answer when you tried to send a document. | Wait for the machine to automatically redial the number. If you want to cancel automatic redialing, wait until the machine starts dialing the number, press [Stop/Reset], then follow the instructions on the LCD. You can also delete the document from memory. |
BUSY/NO SIGNAL | The telephone number you dialed is busy. | Try dialing again after waiting for a moment. |
The fax number dialed was incorrect. | Check the fax number and dial again. | |
The recipient's fax machine is not working | Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine. | |
The recipient is not using a G3 machine | Contact the recipient and ask them to send or receive the document using a G3 machine. | |
The touch tone/rotary pulse setting on your machine is incorrect. | Set your machine to the setting that matches your telephone line. | |
The receiving fax machine did not answer within 55 seconds (after all automatic redialing attempts). | Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine. For an overseas call, add pauses to the registered number. | |
CARTRIDGE JAMMED PRESS [OK] | The Print Head Holder cannot move. This is normally due to a paper jam. | Clear the paper jam or whatever is obstructing the Print Head Holder and then press [OK]. Do not attempt to move the Print Head Holder manually. |
CANNOT SCAN FROM ADF | The document is loaded in the ADF when applying the preset copy ratio. | Load the document on the Platen Glass when copying with the preset copy ratio. |
CHANGE PAPER TO | The paper size setting is set to a size other than A4, letter or legal. | Set the paper size setting to A4, letter or legal and load paper of the same size. |
CHECK DOCUMENT | The Feeder Cover may not be closed properly. | Close the Feeder Cover properly. |
The document is not loaded properly in the ADF, or there may be a document jam. | Remove the document from the ADF and reload it. Clear the document jam if necessary. | |
CHECK PAPER SIZE PRESS [OK] | The size of the paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette and that specified in the paper size setting are different. | Load the correct paper size or change the paper size setting. Then press [OK]. |
CHECK PRINTER | For some reason, the machine cannot operate. | Turn OFF the machine, then ON. If the problem is not resolved, contact the Canon Customer Care Center. |
CHECK PRINTER (PRESS [OK]) | There may be an obstruction that is not allowing the Print Head Holder mechanism to move. | Check for any obstruction (paper clip, small object, etc.). Check also for a paper jam and clear the jam if necessary. Then press [OK] and start again. If the message does not clear after pressing [OK], contact the Canon Customer Care Center. |
The waste ink tank* (which holds the ink used for print head cleaning) is nearly full. | Contact the Canon Customer Care Center to have the waste ink tank replaced immediately. | |
CLEAR PAPER JAM PRESS [OK] | There is a paper jam | Clear the paper jam and reload paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette. Press [OK]. |
COVER OPEN | You opened the Scanning Unit during an operation. | Return the Scanning Unit to its original position. |
DATA IN MEMORY CANNOT TURN OFF | You are unable to turn OFF the machine with [ON/OFF] when documents are saved in memory. | The machine is performing an operation. Wait until the operation has finished, then turn OFF the machine. |
DOCUMENT TOO LONG | The document is longer than 3 3/8 ft. (1 m). | Reduce the length of the document to within 3 3/8 ft. (1 m), and then re-send it. |
There is a document jam in the ADF. | Clear the document jam and reload the document in the ADF. | |
DUPLEXING ERROR | The size of the loaded paper may not be applicable for two-sided copying. | Press[OK] to eject the paper remaining in the unit, then load the applicable paper. |
DUPLEX UNIT JAM | The Duplexing Transport Unit is jammed. | Clear the paper jam. Then load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or the Cassette. |
ECM RX | The machine is receiving a fax using Error Correction Mode (ECM). | ECM receptions may take longer than normal receptions. Set <ECM RX> to <OFF> if you need to receive quickly, or if you know your local lines are in good condition. |
ECM TX | The machine is sending a fax using Error Correction Mode (ECM). | ECM transmissions may take longer than normal transmissions. Set <ECM TX> to <OFF> if you need to transmit quickly, or if you know your local lines are in good condition. |
HANG UP PHONE | The handset is not placed in the handset cradle correctly. | Replace the handset correctly. |
HEAD ALIGN FAILED | The automatic print head alignment failed. | Press [OK], then align the print head manually. |
INK EMPTY | The ink tank is empty. | Replace the ink tank |
INNER COVER 1 OPEN | The Inner Cover 1 is open | Close the Inner Cover 1. |
INVALID KEY/SETTING | An invalid button was pressed or an invalid setting was selected. | Check the button you want to press or the setting you want to enter. |
LOAD PAPER (PLEASE LOAD PAPER AND PRESS [OK] or [START] | The Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette is empty. | Load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette. Make sure the stack is below the paper limit mark. Press [OK], or press [Color] or [Black]. |
MACHINE IN USE CANNOT TURN OFF | You are unable to turn OFF the machine with [ON/OFF] because the machine is performing an operation. | The machine is performing an operation. Wait until the operation has finished, then turn OFF the machine. |
MEMORY FULL | The machine's memory is full because you tried to copy too many pages at once or a very detailed document. | Divide the document and copy each part separately |
The machine's memory is full because it has received too many documents, or a very long or detailed document. | Contact the sender and have him/her divide and resend them. Click here to print / delete documents from memory. | |
NO ANSWER | The recipient's fax machine does not answer. | Check the number. Try dialing again after waiting for a moment. |
NO RX PAPER | The other party's fax machine is out of paper or its memory is full. | Contact the other party and have them load paper in their fax machine or free up space in their fax machine's memory. |
NO TEL # | The One-Touch Speed Dial Key or coded speed dialing code you entered has not been registered. | Register the One-Touch Speed Dial Key or coded speed dialing code. |
NOT AVAILABLE | In manual sending, you entered a speed dialing number that is assigned to a group. | Use regular dialing, or enter a One-Touch Speed Dial Key or coded speed dialing code that only has one fax/telephone number registered. |
PRESS [BLACK START] | [Color] is pressed. | Press [Black]. |
PRESS [COLOR START] | Black] is pressed. | Press [Color]. |
PUT IN CARTRIDGE | There is no print head installed in the machine. | Install the print head. |
RECEIVED IN MEMORY | The machine received the fax in memory because paper or ink has run out, or a paper jam occurred. | Load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette, replace the ink tank, or clear the paper jam. |
SET DOCUMENT ON ADF | The document is not loaded in the ADF when applying the collation function. | Load the document in the ADF, then press [Color] or [Black]. |
TRY AGAIN IN B&W | The recipient's fax machine is not color-compatible. | Press [Black] to resend the faxes. |
TX nnnn SCANNING nnn MEMORY FULL PLEASE WAIT | The machine is sending a document and its memory is full. | The machine continues to send the document as memory becomes available. |
TX/RX CANCELLED | You pressed [Stop/Reset] to cancel the transmission. | If required, try sending or receiving again. |
TX/RX NO. nnnn | When the machine sends or receives a fax, it assigns a unique identification number (nnnn). | Write the number down if you will need it later. |
WAIT COOLING | During printing, the print head may have become too hot. | Allow the machine to cool down. The machine will resume printing when it has cooled down. |
WASTE INK NEAR FULL | The waste ink tank* (which holds the ink used for print head cleaning) is nearly full. | Press [Stop/Reset] to release the error. You can still print for a short period, but when it becomes full you will no longer be able to print. Contact the Canon Customer Care Center. |
WRONG CARTRIDGE | The print head is not installed correctly. | Install the print head. If the message remains on the LCD, the print head may be defective. Contact the Canon Customer Care Center. |
