Move non-Canon TWAIN files from TWAIN_32 folder

Description

Non-Canon TWAIN data source files may prohibit scanning from certain applications / programs.

Solution

TWAIN_32 Folder

It may be necessary to move a competitor's data source files from C:\Windows\TWAIN_32\ so that the Canon scanner driver will function properly. From the TWAIN_32\ folder, move the entire sub-folder to another drive or directory.

To move the folder on a Windows XP computer.

To move the folder on a Windows 7 / 10 / Vista computer.

Note:

If an error appears that the file is in use or that permission is required to move the data source file, start the computer in Selective Startup.

 

 

Windows XP:

  1. Click 'Start' and then 'My Computer'.
     
  2. On the right-hand pane, double-click 'Local Disk (C:)'.
     
  3. Double-click 'WINDOWS'.
     
  4. Use the scroll bar to view twain_32, then double-click the folder.
     
  5. In C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\ folder, right-click on the non-Canon model folder and select 'Cut'.

    Note:

    If an error appears that the file is in use or that permission is required to move the data source file, start the computer in Selective Startup.
     
  6. On the top left-hand corner of the window, click the left arrow to go back to the previous folder. You should be in C:\WINDOWS\ folder.
     
  7. In C:\WINDOWS\ folder, right-click in a blank any area and select 'Paste'.
     
  8. Now, open the application you were trying to scan from and try again.

 

Windows 7/ Windows 10  / Windows Vista:

  1. Click the Start icon and select 'Computer' (Windows 10, in search bar, search for "This" and select 'This PC').
     
  2. On the left-hand pane, double-click 'Local Disk (C:)' or, Win !0 'Windows (C:)'.


     
  3. Use the scroll bar on the left-hand pane to scroll down and then double-click 'Windows' folder.


     
  4. Use the scroll bar on the left-hand pane to scroll down and then double-click 'twain_32' folder.


     
  5. Under twain_32, right-click on the non-Canon model folder and select 'Cut'



    Note:
    If an error appears that the file is in use or that permission is required to move the data source file, start the computer in Selective Startup.
     
  6. Use the scroll bar on the left-hand pane to scroll up and then click 'Windows' folder.
     
  7. In Windows folder, right-click in a blank any area and select 'Paste'.
     
  8. If prompted to provide administrator permission to move the folder, click 'Continue'.

  9. If prompted to provide permission again, click 'Continue'.
     
  10. Reboot the computer, open the application you were trying to scan from and try again.

 


Disable Third-party Software

Software applications that are active during installation can cause errors, installation difficulties, abort the installation or prevent services from starting. You can prevent the application's services from starting through 'System Configuration Utility' (also referred to as 'msconfig').

  1. See your applications' documentation for instructions on how to disable its services.
     
  2. If you are unable to locate the documentation, disable the startup items in the Windows 'System Configuration Utility'.

  3. If disabling startup items in 'msconfig' does not correct the issue, disable all non-Microsoft related services in the 'Services' tab of 'System Configuration Utility' window.
     
  4. After disabling non-Microsoft services , restart Windows.

Accessing System Configuration Utility*

System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) allows you to temporarily change the way Windows starts by disabling startup programs and services individually or several at a time.

 Important:

Making changes using the System Configuration may cause some applications not function properly. Always note any changes made, so that you can reconfigure the utility if problems were to occur.

To open System Configuration Utility:

  1. On the Window desktop, click Start, and then Run.**

    ** In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the Start icon and type msconfig in the Search text box and double-click the msconfig.exe file that is found. Skip ahead to Step 3.
     

  2. In the 'Open' box of 'Run' window, type msconfig, and then click OK.



     

  3. In the General tab of 'System Configuration Utility' dialog box, click Selective Startup radio button.

     Important:

    If Selective Startup is already selected, write down the items that are still checked here and on the Startup tab so that they can be re-enabled after troubleshooting.

    Note:

    Different versions of the operating system will have different numbers of tabs.



     

  4. Click the Startup tab. Remove the check in the boxes for individual applications to keep them from starting automatically with Windows.

     Important:

    Only disable applications that you are familiar with. If you are unsure of what a particular application does, do not uncheck it.


     

  5. Click OK.
     

  6. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
     

  7. Attempt to install, print, scan or complete the original task you began.
     

  8. If installation, printing or scanning is unsuccessful, open 'System Configuration Utility' again.
     

  9. Click the Services tab.
     

  10. In 'Services' tab, click Hide All Microsoft Services to place a check in the box, and then remove the check in the boxes for the individual services that you wish to disable.

     Important:

    Disabling certain services may have adverse effects on computer operation. Only disable services that you are familiar with. If you are unsure of what a particular service does, do not uncheck it.



     

  11. Click OK.
     

  12. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
     

  13. Attempt to install, print, scan or complete the original task you began.

 

To disable Selective Startup:

  1. On the Window desktop, click Start, and then Run.
     

  2. In the ' Open' box of 'Run' window, type msconfig, and then click OK.
     

  3. In the General tab of ' System Configuration Utility' dialog box, click Normal Startup radio button.
     

  4. Click OK.
     

  5. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.

 

* System Configuration Utility (msconfig) is not available in Windows 2000.
