Learn how to set your printer as the default on a Mac computer.

Solution

When you set a printer as the default, all print jobs automatically route to that printer. You can change the default at any time. You can also select a different printer for any individual print job.


Set a printer as the default

  1. Confirm that your printer is connected and turned on.

  2. On the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  3. Select Printers & Scanners or Print & Scan, depending on which version of macOS® is installed.

  4. Select the printer to be used as default from the Default Printer drop-down.

    Note If duplicate copies of the printer exist in the printers list, you can delete them. To delete the previous copies, select the printer from the list and press the [-minus button below the list. If a minus button is not below the printers list, click on the printer you want to delete, then click Remove Printer.... When prompted, click Remove Printer and the duplicate copy will be deleted.
