USBSCAN.SYS is a Windows system file and required by the scan driver. If the system file is missing, a message will appear while installing the scan driver or will appear when attempting to scan.  Examples: "An error occurred while files were being copied" or  "Cannot communicate with scanner".

 

Search for this file and direct the installation to the appropriate path.

Search USBSCAN.SYS file on Windows XP:

  1. Click 'Start', 'Search' and select 'For Files or Folders'.
     
  2. At 'Search Results' window, type usbscan.sys in 'Search for files or folders named' field.
     
  3. At 'Look in' drop-down menu, confirm your computer's hard drive is selected. In most cases, C: is the computer's hard drive.
     
  4. Click 'More advanced options' link.
     
  5. Confirm checkmarks appear beside 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders and 'Search folders'.


     
  6. Click 'Search' button.
     
  7. Once search has completed and if the file does not exist, consult the computer manufacturer.
    1. If the file exists and a message appears while installing the scan driver, direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers.
       
  8. Close the 'Search Results' window.

  1. Click the 'Start' button.
     
  2. Type "search" (without quotations) in the Start Search box.
     
  3. In the pop-up menu of the Start menu, type click 'Change search options for files and folders'.
     
  4. In the Folder Options window, click 'View' tab.
    1. In Advanced settings, select the radio button labeled Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
    2. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
    3. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
       
  5. Click 'Apply to folders' button at the top of the Folder Options window.
     
  6. Now, click 'Apply' and then 'OK'.The Folder Options window will close.
     
  7. Click 'Start' button again and select 'Computer'.
     
  8. In the Computer window, double-click Local Disk (C:).
     
  9. Double-click 'Windows'.
    Confirm the path as the search destination. The path should be Computer > Local Disk (C:) (the name of your hard disk / drive) > Windows.


     
  10. Type 'usbscan.sys' (without the single quotes) at the top of the window and then press Enter on your keyboard.


     
  11. Once search has completed and if the file does not exist, consult the computer manufacturer.
    1. If the file exists and a message appears while installing the scan driver, direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers.
    2. If installation still fails, it may be necessary to direct the installer to the root drive, for example C:\.

  1. Click the 'Start' button.
     
  2. Type "search" (without quotations) in the Start Search box.

  11. In Change selected locations window, click the arrow beside 'Computer' and the hard drive (typically this is Hard Disk (C:)) to expand each folder.


     
  12. Now, use the scroll bar to view 'Windows'. Click the box to place a check mark beside Windows and then click 'OK'.

    The top of window should now read Search Results in Windows.
     
  13. In Name box, type 'usbscan.sys' (without the single quotes), place a check in Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow) box and then click 'Search'.


     
  14. Once search has completed and if the file does not exist, consult the computer manufacturer.
    1. If the file exists and a message appears while installing the scan driver, direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\.

Search USBSCAN.SYS file on Windows 98 / Me / 2000:

  1. From the Windows desktop, right-click 'Start', then click 'Explore'.
     
  2. In Windows Explorer, click 'Tools', then click 'Folder Options'.
     
  3. Click the 'View' tab.
     
  4. Be sure that the 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button is selected, then click 'OK'. Close the Folder Options and Explorer windows.
     
  5. On Windows 98, click 'Start', 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders'. On Windows Me and 2000, click 'Start', 'Search' and select 'For Files or Folders'.
     
  6. At 'Find: All Files' window (Windows 98), type usbscan.sys in 'Named' field. At 'Search Results' window (Windows Me and 2000), type usbscan.sys in 'Search for files or folders named' field.
     
  7. At 'Look in' drop-down menu, confirm your computer's hard drive is selected. In most cases, C: is the computer's hard drive.
     
  8. On Windows 98, click 'Find Now' button. On Windows Me and 2000, click 'Search Now' button.
     
  9. Once search has completed and if the file does not exist, consult the computer manufacturer.
    1. If the file exists and a message appears while installing the scan driver, direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers (where C is your computer's hard drive letter).
    2. If the file exists and the message appears while scanning, click on the attachment to open Device Manager and check if the scanning device is listed as 'Other'. Then update the driver and direct the installer to the appropriate path. For example, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers (where C is your computer's hard drive letter).
       
  10. Close the 'Search Results' window.
