Solution

Install the CanoScan Toolbox with the Appropriate Permissions

  1. Boot the computer with an administrative user account and then reinstall Toolbox. After rebooting the computer, try the scanner buttons.
     
  2. If the buttons still do not function, verify if CanoScan Toolbox is a registered application event.
     
    1. From the Control Panel, double-click 'Scanners and Cameras'.
       
    2. Double-click the appropriate scanner model.Click the Events tab.
       
    3. If the CanoScan Toolbox is NOT listed in the Send to this application section on the Events tab as seen below, then a registry key may be missing or the user does not have sufficient permissions.


       
  3. Open the Registry Editor and check for the existence of the following location.

    +HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    +SOFTWARE
    +Microsoft
    +Windows
    +CurrentVersion
    +StillImage
    +Registered Applications

    If this location did not exist prior to installing the CanoScan Toolbox, then it should have been created during the Toolbox installation. However, it may not show up until after the computer has been rebooted.
     
  4. If the Registered Applications folder does not exist after installing Toolbox and rebooting the computer, then the current user may not have sufficient permissions. User should verify that they are logged on with an administrative user account and then reinstall Toolbox.
     
  5. If the Registered Applications folder exists in the registry, then the CanoScan Toolbox should be seen listed to the right as seen below.


     
    1. If "CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.x" appears in this location, then close the registry and try using the scanner buttons.
       
    2. If "CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.x" does NOT appear in this location, then check the permissions of the 'Registered Applications' folder by right-clicking on it and selecting Permissions. Be sure that 'Full Control' is allowed.

    3. Do the same for the 'StillImage' folder. Once Full Control is allowed, reinstall the CanoScan Toobox and Reboot the computer.
