Confirm the port on the device functions properly by connecting it to another port or computer.

  1. If the computer does not recognize the device when a cable is securely connected at ends, try another port on the computer.

  2. If there is no other port on the computer to test or if the device is still not recognized when connecting it to another port on the computer, confirm a separate device does function on the same port. For example, if connecting a printer to the computer and the printer is not recognized by the computer, connect a scanner or digital camera to the same port (if possible) to confirm the port is functioning properly.

  3. If there isn't another device to test on the same port as the original device, connect the original device to another computer.
