The Prevent paper abrasion function increases the space between the print head and the paper. This prevents the print head from touching the paper, which is useful when using thicker, non-Canon paper.
If Prevent paper abrasion is selected, smudges may disappear, but the print quality may also deteriorate. If this happens, select High in the Print Quality section of your printer settings.
