Shooting Problem Subjects for the Autofocus

The autofocus may not work well on the following types of subjects.

  • Subjects with extremely low contrast to the surroundings
  • Subjects mixing close and far objects
  • Subjects with extremely bright objects at the center of the composition
  • Subjects that are moving quickly.

To shoot these subjects, first aim the camera at an object at a similar distance, lock the focus and recompose the image with the desired subject, or use manual focus.

Shooting with Focus Lock

Focus Lock Method 1

1. Press the <DISP.> button to turn on the LCD monitor.

2. Aim the AF frame at an object at a similar distance to the subject you wish to shoot.

3. Press the shutter button halfway to lock the focus.

The AE setting will also lock when you do this. The exposure may occasionally be incorrect if the difference between the two items is too great. Use Method 2 when this happens.

4. Keep it pressed while you recompose the image and press the shutter button all the way to shoot the image.

Focus Lock Method 2

1. Press the <DISP.> button to turn on the LCD monitor.

2. Press the shutter button halfway to lock the focus. Keep it pressed and press the /button.

  • The AFL icon appears on the LCD monitor.
  • The focus setting will lock even if the shutter button and the / button are released.
  • The focus lock setting will cancel if the / button is pressed again.

3. Recompose the image and press the shutter button all the way to shoot the image.

  • Focus lock method 2 cannot be used while the Shooting mode is set to .

  • Method 2 is convenient because you can let go of the shutter button to recompose the image.
  • When shooting through glass, get as close as possible to avoid reflection off the glass.
  • The AF lock can be released by pressing the zoom lever or <MENU> button, by changing the shooting mode or by turning the LCD monitor off.
