Solution
How to start the Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) Service (Win XP / Win 7)
- Click Start.
- Right-click My Computer or Computer and select Manage. This brings up the 'Computer Management' window seen below.

- Under 'Services and Applications' click Services. This will display a list of services in the right pane of the 'Computer Management' window. A portion of this window is seen below.

- Scroll through the list to locate and then double-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
This brings up the 'Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Properties' window seen below.

- Be sure that 'Startup type:' is not set to Disabled. You can choose either Automatic or Manual.
- Once you have enabled the 'Startup type:', under 'Sevice status:' click the Start button to start the service.
How to start the Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) Service (Windows 8)
- While on the Metro desktop, type the letter "C" (without the quotation marks).
- Right-click Computer and select Manage.
- This brings up the 'Computer Management' window seen below.

- Under 'Services and Applications' click Services. This will display a list of services in the right pane of the 'Computer Management' window. A portion of this window is seen below.

- Scroll through the list to locate and then double-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
This brings up the 'Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Properties' window seen below.

How to start STIMON (Windows 98 & Me)
- Click Start, then Run, and type "stimon.exe" and click OK.
