Learn how to send images to your computer with your PowerShot camera's Wi-Fi function.

Solution

The the different options below will guide you on the best way to use the Wi-Fi® function of your PowerShot camera so that you can transfer the images wirelessly from your camera to your computer.

 

Before you begin

  1. Check the computer`s requirements.

  1. Make sure that the included CameraWindow software is installed. The software is also available for download from the Canon website.

  2. Confirm that an access point base unit or Wi-Fi router is connected to the computer.

  • An access point base or router is a device that creates a network (LAN) structure that connects multiple computers.

  • A router that contains an internal Wi-Fi function is called a Wi-Fi router.

  • This page will refer to all Wi-Fi routers and base stations as access points.

 Even if your computer is connected to an access point, images sent from the camera to the computer requires some changes in the computer`s settings. The procedures are explained below.

 

Windows 7 settings

  1. In the Start menu, select All Programs, then select Canon Utilities.

  2. Select CameraWindow, then select Wi-Fi connection setup.

  3. A screen similar to the one below will be displayed. Select Yes.

  4. The screen below appears.

  5. Select the Start menu on the computer, select Control Panel, then select Network and Internet, and finally, select View network computers and devices.

  6. Don't close the displayed screen. You can now connect the camera to the computer.

 

Windows 8 settings

  1. Move the pointer to the bottom right of the screen to display the Charms dock (1), and then select Start (2).

  2. Select Wi-Fi Connection Set-up on the Start menu.

  3. A screen similar to the one below will be displayed. Select Yes.

  4. Select OK when the screen below appears.

  5. On the computer desktop screen, move the mouse pointer to the lower-right corner to open the Charms dock, select Settings, select Control Panel, and finally, select Add a Device.

  6. Don't close the displayed screen. You can now connect the camera to the computer.

 

Connect the camera to the computer

 The PowerShot ELPH 190 is used to show the procedure below. The position and shape of the buttons, screens displayed, and settings may differ based the model you use.

  1. Press the Wi-Fi button .

  2. With the default settings, the device nickname (1) is displayed.

  3. To change the camera's nickname.

  • Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the Nickname field.

  • Press the Function/Set button  button to display the keyboard, and then enter the desired nickname.

  • After you entered the nickname, press the Menu button to return to the registration screen,

  • Press the up and down directional buttons , choose OK, and then press the Function/Set button .

  • The nickname you choose will be displayed on Select a Device screen when you connect the camera to other devices via Wi-Fi.

  1. Press the up, down, left, or right directional buttons   to choose Connect to computer , and then press the Function/Set button .

  2. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Add a Device, and then press the Function/Set button .

     Once a computer is added, the computer name will be displayed on screen. To connect to the computer again, simply choose the computer name from the list.

  3. A list of detected access points will be displayed in the Access Point Connect screen.

  4. WPS® connection, listed access point, and manual connection are different methods to connect the camera to an access point.

 

WPS connection

 WPS makes it easy to connect devices over Wi-Fi.

  • A WPS connection button is affixed to your access point. For further details on the location and how many seconds to press it, refer to the user manual included with your access point.

  • You can use either push button configuration (PBC) or PIN Method to set up WPS on a supported device.

  • The PBC Method is used in the explanation below.

  1. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose WPS Connection, and then press the Function/Set button .

  2. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose PBC Method, and then press Function/Set button .

  3. Hold down the WPS connection button on the access point for a few seconds.

  4. Press the Function/Set button  to select Next on the camera.

  5. The camera will connect to the access point.

 

Listed access point connection

 The access point's encryption key is necessary for connection.

  • Refer to the user guide included with your access point to look up information on SSID, Network certificates, and security keys.

  • An encryption key (network key) is used when data needs to be encrypted while it is transmitted wirelessly.

  1. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose an access point, and then press the Function/Set button .

  2. The Password Entry screen appears.

  3. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the password entry field (1).

  4. Press the Function/Set button  to display the keyboard.

  5. Enter the encryption key, and then press the Function/Set button .

  6. After you enter the encryption key, press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Next (2), and then press the Function/Set button .

  7. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Auto and press the Function/Set button .

  8. A list of devices connected to the access point will appear on the screen.

  9. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the name of the computer you want to connect with, and then press the Function/Set button .

  10. The screen below appears.

  11. Your camera and computer are now connected. If you use a Mac® or Windows with the drivers installed, the screen will turn off after the connection is terminated.

     

Manual connection

 The access point's encryption key is necessary for connection.

  • Refer to the user guide included with your access point to look up information on SSID, Network certificates, and security keys.

  • An encryption key (network key) is used when data needs to be encrypted while it is transmitted wirelessly.

  1. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Manual Settings and press the Function/Set button .

  2. The SSID Entry screen appears.

  3. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the SSID entry field (1).

  4. Press the Function/Set button  to display the keyboard.

  5. Enter the SSID, and then press the Function/Set button .

  6. After you enter the SSID, Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Next (2), and then press the Function/Set button .

  7. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the security setting method, and then press the Function/Set button .

  8. The Password Entry screen appears.

  9. Press the up and down directional buttons   to choose the password entry field (1).

  10. Press the Function/Set button to display the keyboard.

  11. Enter the encryption key, and then press the Function/Set button .

  12. After you enter the encryption key, press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Next (2), and then press the Function/Set button .

  13. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose Auto, and then press the Function/Set button .

  14. A list of devices connected to the access point will appear on the screen.

  15. Press the up and down directional buttons  to choose the name of the computer you want to connect with, and then press the Function/Set button .

  16. The screen below appears.

  17. Your camera and computer are now connected. If you use a Mac® or Windows with the drivers installed, the screen will turn off after the connection is terminated.

 

Driver installation for Windows only

 It is necessary to install the drivers when you wirelessly connect the camera to the computer for the first time. Please follow the procedures below.

  • Make sure this screen appears on the camera`s display.

 

  • Windows 7

    • Double-click the connected device icon from Other devices and driver installation will begin.

    • After driver installation is complete, and the camera and computer connection is enabled, the AutoPlay screen will be displayed.

    • The camera's LCD panel will be blank.

    • Select Download Images From Canon Camera.

 

  • You can now send images from your camera to the computer.

 

  • Windows 8

    • The camera's icon will be displayed in the Add a device screen.

    • Double-click the icon to begin driver installation.

    • When the connection between the camera and the computer has been established. A small window similar to the one below will appear. Select Tap to choose what happens with this device.

  • The camera's LCD panel will be blank.

  • Select Downloads images from Canon camera.

  • You can now send images from your camera to the computer.

 

Send images to the computer

 CameraWindow's default settings will save images to the Pictures or My Pictures folders on a computer.

  • Movies will take longer to import since the file size is larger than still images.

  • Turn off the camera to disconnect it.

  1. On the CameraWindow menu window, select Import Images from Camera.

  2. The next screen will appear. Select (1) Import Untransferred Images(2) Select Images to Import, or (3) Import All Images.

  3. If you chose Select Images to Import, (1) select the images you want to import, and then (2) select the Import icon .

  4. The computer will start to transfer images from the camera.

  5. Image import is now complete. Select OK.
