Setting the Microphone (VIXIA HF G40 / LEGRIA HF G40)

Solution

When recording in very quiet surroundings, the built-in microphone may pick up the sound of the camcorder's internal machinery. Also, when recording outside, the built-in microphone may pick up excessive noise from wind. In such situations, we recommend using an external microphone with a wind screen.

Using the SM-V1 Surround Microphone or DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone (Optional Accessories)

Using the SM-V1 you can add a sense of depth and presence to your recordings with 5.1ch surround sound. Using the DM-100 you can accurately record audio coming directly from the direction you are recording. When you use the optional SM-V1 Surround Microphone with this camcorder for the first time, you will need to update the camcorder's firmware using the memory card supplied with the SM-V1. For details, refer to the instruction manual of the accessory used.

SM-V1 Surround Microphone (Optional Accessory)

When using the SM-V1 Surround Microphone or DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone, we recommend that you use the wind screen supplied with the microphone. When you attach the SM-V1 or DM-100, will appear on the screen.
NOTE
When using the optional SM-V1 Surround Microphone:
- Change the microphone's directionality mode under the [Surround Mic Directionality] setting in the menu.
- You can enjoy the full effect of recordings made with 5.1ch surround sound on HDTVs compatible with 5.1ch surround sound connected to the camcorder using the supplied High Speed HDMI cable. Audio output from the AV OUT and headphone terminals will be converted to 2ch stereo. The camcorder's built-in speaker is monaural.
- When the recording mode is set to 28 Mbps LPCM (59.94P) or 24 Mbps LPCM for AVCHD movies or when recording MP4 movies, recordings will be made with 2ch sound.

Using the WM-V1 Wireless Microphone (Optional Accessory)

Using the optional WM-V1 Wireless Microphone, you can reliably record sound even when recording subjects at a distance exceeding the practical range of the built-in microphone. You can also mix and record audio from the WM-V1 with audio from the built-in microphone. For details about using the WM-V1, refer to the instruction manual supplied with the microphone.

Using Commercially Available Microphones

You can also use commercially available condenser microphones with their own power supply. You can connect almost any stereo microphone with a φ3.5 mm plug but audio recording levels may vary.

NOTE
Using Wi-Fi functions while an external microphone is connected may cause noise to be recorded. Keep the microphone away from the camcorder when recording.
