Description

Shooting People against Starry Skies (Star Portrait) (PowerShot G5 X)

Solution

You can capture beautiful shots of people against starry skies.
After initially firing the flash to capture the person, the camera shoots twice without flash. The three images are combined into a single image and processed to make the stars more prominent.

  • Procedures for shooting in Star Portrait mode are explained below.
1. Press the power button to turn the camera on.

2. Set the mode dial to [SCN].

3. Press the <> button when the shooting screen is displayed.

4. When the menu options are displayed, press the <><> buttons to choose [Shooting mode] () in the upper left of the screen, and then press the <> button.

REFERENCE
  • If the default settings have not been changed, [ ] will be displayed.

5. Press the <><> buttons to choose [ :Star] from the options displayed at the bottom of the screen, and then press the <> button.

6. Press <> when the following screen is displayed.

7. Press the <><> buttons to choose [ : Star Portrait ] from the options appearing on the bottom of the screen, and then press the <> button.

NOTE
  • Zoom is set to maximum wide angle and cannot be adjusted.

8. Raise the flash with your finger.

9. Mount the camera on a tripod or take other measures to keep it still.

10. Press the shutter button to shoot. The flash fires as the camera takes the first shot.
  • The second and third shots are now taken, without firing the flash.

11. The person you are shooting should stay still until the lamp blinks three times after the third shot, which may take up to about two seconds.

12. All the shots are combined to create a single image.

IMPORTANT
  • Under some shooting conditions, images may not look as expected.
  • For better shots, have the person stand away from illumination such as street lights, and make sure the flash is raised.
  • There will be a delay before you can shoot again, as the camera processes the images.
  • To avoid blurry shots, make sure the person you shoot in step 11 stays still.
  • ISO is set to AUTO and cannot be changed.
  • The aperture cannot be set manually.
NOTE
  • For easier viewing, try choosing MENU > [ ] tab > [Night Display] > [On] before shooting.
  • To adjust subject brightness, try changing the flash exposure compensation.
  • To adjust background brightness, try changing the exposure compensation. However, images may not look as expected under some shooting conditions, and the person should stay still in step 11, which may take up to about 15 seconds.
  • To capture more stars and brighter starlight, choose MENU > [ ] tab > [Star Portrait Settings] > [Star Visibility] > [Prominent]. However, images may not look as expected under some shooting conditions, and the person should stay still in steps 10, which may take up to about 8 seconds.
  • To make stars brighter, choose MENU > [ ] tab > [Star Emphasis] > [Sharp]. To emphasize the bright stars in a starry sky, set [Star Emphasis] to [Soft]. This setting can produce eye-catching shots by enlarging bright stars while de-emphasizing dimmer stars. To disable starlight processing, select [Off].

This completes the explanation of shooting in Star Portrait mode.
