Learn how to obtain the wireless network name (SSID) and security key information from a Windows computer.

Solution

Your Windows PC contains information about your wireless network. This information includes things such as your network name, encryption type and network password. This information can be found in the Network and Sharing Center. Follow the steps below to get this information.

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center

    • In Windows 7, select StartControl Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.

    • In Windows 8 / 8.1, press Windows key and X at the same time > Control Panel > Network and InternetNetwork and Sharing Center.

    • For Windows 10, select StartSettingsNetwork & Internet. In the Wi-Fi section, scroll down to Network and Sharing Center.

  2. In the Network and Sharing Center, select on the name of your network.

  3. Select the Wireless Properties button.

  4. In the Wireless Network Properties window, select the Security tab to see the Encryption typeSecurity type, and Network security key.

  5. Place a check in the box for Show characters to see your network password in plain text.
