Learn how to replace an ink tank for your PIXMA TS9020.

Solution

When ink run outs or a support or error code occurs, the printer can't print or scan. For details on ink lamp flashing speed, see check status with ink lamps.


Before replacing an ink tank, there are some things to know.

Cautions Cautions

  • Don't touch the metallic parts or other parts inside the printer.

  • Handle the ink tank so you don't stain your clothes or the surrounding area.

  • Don't drop or apply excessive pressure to the tank.

  • ​Discard the empty ink tank according to local laws and regulations.


Replace an ink tank

Follow these steps to replace an ink tank:

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Open the scanning unit / cover. Wait for the print head holder to move to the replacement position. 
    Cautions Don't try to move or stop it yourself.

    Note If the scanning unit / cover is left open for more than 10 minutes, the print head holder moves to the right. If this happens, close and reopen the cover.

  3. When the lamp flashes quickly, push the tab (A) and lift the ink tank to remove it.

  4. Take a new tank out of the package. Remove the orange tape (B), and protective film (C). If the orange tape remains on the Y-shape air hole (D), ink may splash or the printer may not print.

  5. Hold the ink tank with the orange protective cap (E) pointing up. 
    Cautions Don't push the sides of the ink tank with the Y-shape air hole (D) blocked. Don't reattach the protective cap (E) once you remove it.

  6. Lift up the tab on the orange protective cap (E) and gently remove it.

    Cautions Don't touch the inside of the orange protective cap (F), or the open ink port (G), or ink may stain your hands.

  7. Insert the front end of the ink tank into the print head at a slant. Make sure the position of the tank matches the label.Ink tank being inserted at a slant
     

  8. Press on the top of the ink tank until it snaps firmly into place. Make sure that the ink lamp lights up.

Lift the scanning unit cover upward, then gently lower it down to close it. If a message is displayed on the screen, select OK.Scanning unit cover being gently closed
 


After installation

  • The printer starts cleaning the print head automatically. Wait for the task to finish.


  • The printer may make some noise during these operations, but this does not indicate a problem.


About ink tanks

  • If removing an ink tank, be sure to replace it immediately as the printer should not be left with the ink tanks removed.

  • Once a new ink tank is removed from the packaging, it should be installed into the printer immediately so the ink does not dry out, which can cause issues when the printer.

  • When replacing multiple ink tanks, replace one ink at a time before removing the next ink tank.

  • All ink tanks must be installed in order to print.

  • Only use New ink tanks when replacing. Used tanks may cause the nozzles to clog and may not alert you when it's time to replace the ink.

  • ​You can use a combination of standard and XL inks for your printer. For example, you can install a PGI-270XL ink tank and then install CLI-271 ink tanks.

  • To maintain optimal printing quality, it is recommended to use an ink tank within six months of first use.
