Automatic Sensor Cleaning (EOS M5)

The camera has a cleaning function that automatically removes dust from the image sensor when the power is turned on or off, or when the camera shuts off in Power Saving mode. This cleaning function can be activated whenever you like, or shut off entirely.

1. Set the camera's power switch to < ON >.

2. Press the <MENU> button.

3. Press the [ ], [ ] buttons or turn the <> dial to select the [ - 3] tab.
Press the [ ], [ ] buttons or turn the <> dial to select [Sensor cleaning], and then press the <> button.

4. Press the [ ], [ ] buttons or turn the <> dial to select [Clean now ], and then press the <> button.

5. Press the [ ], [ ] buttons or turn the <> dial to select the [OK], and then press the <> button.
The screen will indicate that the sensor is being cleaned. Although there will be a shutter sound, a picture is not taken.

  • The sensor cleaning also works while no lens is attached.
  • If no lens is attached, do not insert your finger or blower tip beyond the lens mount. This is to prevent damage to the shutter curtains.
  • For the most effective cleaning results, place the camera upright on a desk or other surface before cleaning.
  • Repeated consecutive sensor cleanings will not produce notably better results. [Clean now ] may not be available for selection immediately after cleaning.
  • If there is dust or any other material on the image sensor that the cleaning function cannot remove, contact a Canon Customer Support Help Desk.
  • Normally, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit will eliminate most of the dust that might be visible on captured images. However, in case visible dust still remains, you can append the Dust Delete Data to the image for erasing the dust spots later. The Dust Delete Data is used by the Digital Photo Professional software* to erase the dust spots automatically.
  • For details about dust delete data, refer to the cameraâs instruction manuals. For Automatic Dust Erasure Processing using Dust Delete Data, refer to the Software Instruction Manual for Digital Photo Professional.*
*If the abovementioned items (Digital Photo Professional software/instruction manuals) were not included with you camera, please download them from the Canon homepage.
