Shipping Lithium Ion Batteries

Solution

Background
In order to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Lithium Ion batteries used in Canon Camera products (EOS DSLR, video camcorders, PowerShot digital compact cameras, etc.) could be classified as hazardous material and would require a specific shipping method be followed per regulations.

*For complete regulation of Lithium Ion and Lithium Metal battery or cell shipping requirements, please refer to the latest U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Title 49 of the code of Federal Regulations.

General Lithium Ion Shipping Information
  • Unless you are Hazmat trained, it is unlawful to ship lithium ion batteries via air shipment.  Please use ground shipping.
  • We recommend shipping Lithium Ion batteries inside the battery compartment of your camera/camcorder.
  • No more than two batteries may be shipped in one package.
  • Cameras/Camcorders with a battery inside AND Lithium Ion batteries shipped by themselves must be packaged in a STURDY BOX with sufficient packing materials to prevent damage in shipping.
  • We recommend printing the required warning labels (below) and bringing them to the shipper.
  • Bring your unsealed package to a shipper who can provide you with a tracking number (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.).
  • Inform the shipper that a lithium ion battery is being shipped.  There are strict shipping requirements for lithium ion batteries, including special packaging and labeling.
  • Packages with lithium ion batteries must have the following labels affixed when Ground shipped:
  • A Lithium Ion Battery Safety Document

  • A Lithium Ion Battery Handling Label

  • A Class 9 Lithium Battery Label
IMPORTANT NOTE: You may have difficulty obtaining the necessary warning labels at certain shipping locations (FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.).  We recommend printing this document, cutting out the required labels, and bringing them to the shipper with your unsealed package. Larger printable copies of the above labels are available for download below.
