Description

This article provides information on printing using ICC profiles from Photoshop on a Windows PC.

Solution

When printing using Photoshop, make sure that the image size is the same as the paper that you are printing on. This can be done by clicking on the Image menu and selecting Image Size.

Once in the Image Size window, you can manually enter the paper width and height in inches into the appropriate fields, or you can select a preset in the Fit To: drop down menu. If you wish to manually enter the width and height into their respective fields, make sure the Constrain Proportions option  is enabled.  It will look like this when enabled:

Sometimes, the width or height might be slightly larger or smaller after you enter their values into their respective fields.  For example, 8.5" x 11" may come out as 8.5" x 11.333".

If you want to print using ICC profiles, check the color space of the image first to make sure that it is in Adobe RGB. If the image is in sRGB there is no need to setup printing with ICC profiles. To check the color space, make sure the image is open and click on Edit and then Color Settings

After your image has been resized and you are ready to print, click File and Print.

Depending on the image, you may need to check the box for Scale to Fit Media so the image is not stretched or compressed.

In the Color Handling section, select Photoshop Manages Colors.  For the Printer Profile, select the paper profile for the paper that you are printing on.  Many third party paper companies will either have ICC profiles for the papers that they manufacture.  If they do not, they may suggest the usage of a particular profile.  Check the website of the paper manufacturer for more information.

After selecting the correct profile, click Print Settings...

This will open up the properties window for your printer.  Go to the Main tab.  For Color/Intensity, select Manual and click Set.  This will open the Manual Color Adjustment window.

Depending on the printer that you are using, you will either see the option for Color Correction as soon as the Manual Color Adjustment window is opened, or you will click the Matching tab at the top of this window.  When you see Color Correction, set it to None.  Then, click OK.

After disabling the color correction and clicking OK, you will be back on the Main tab.  On this tab, set the Media Type to the kind of paper that you are printing on.  If you are using a third party paper, use the settings that they recommend.  Be sure that you also have the Paper Source specified.

After specifying the media type and paper source, change the print quality to Custom and click Set...

In the Custom window, move the slider to the number setting that the ICC profile shows or that the paper manufacturer recommends.  Then, click OK.

Click OK on the printer properties window.  You are now ready to print.
