Solution

Tip The instructions below are for printing envelopes. Check these articles to learn how to load paper in the rear tray or load paper in the cassette.

About printing on envelopes

There are a few things to know when it comes to envelopes.

  • Don't use certain envelopes that may jam the printer or cause it to malfunction:

    • Envelopes with an embossed or treated surface.

    • Envelopes with a double flap.

    • Envelopes whose gummed flaps are already moistened and adhesive.

  • Printing envelopes from the operation panel or from a PictBridge (Wireless LAN) compliant device is not supported.

  • You can load the following into the rear tray:

    • Envelope DL

    • Envelope Com 10

Prepare the envelopes

  1. Press down on all four corners and edges of the envelopes to flatten them.

  2. If the envelopes are curled, hold two opposing corners and gently twist them to uncurl.

  3. If the corner of the envelope flap is folded, flatten it.

  4. Use a pen to press the edge of the envelope that goes first into the printer (leading edge) to sharpen the crease.
Note The figure below shows a side view of the leading edge of the envelope.

Caution Envelopes may jam if they aren't flat or the edges aren't aligned. Make sure that no curl or puff exceeds 0.12 inches (3 mm).

Load the envelopes

  1. Open the rear tray cover (A) and then pull up the paper support (B).

  2. Open the feed slot cover (C).

  3. Slide the paper guides (D) out to open them, and load the envelopes in the center of the rear tray with:

    • The flap folded and the envelopes in the portrait orientation with the address side facing up.

Note The folded flap will be faced down on the right side.

    • No more than 10 envelopes in the tray.

  4. Slide the paper guides (D) in to align them with both sides of the envelopes, being careful not to push them too hard against the envelopes.
Note The envelopes may not be fed properly if the paper guides are pushed in too far.

  5. Make sure the envelope stack is not higher than the load limit mark (E).

Good to know

Note To prevent incorrect printing, this printer has a function that detects whether the information set for the paper in the tray matches the paper settings entered into the display screen. When this function is enabled, an error message displays if the settings don't match. If you see this error message, check and correct the paper settings.
