Description

Learn more about using the two types of scanner drivers when scanning from your Macintosh running OSX 10.11 El Capitan.

Solution

Two types of scanner drivers

Your Macintosh computer can use a TWAIN driver and an Image Capture (ICA) driver, but only one type can be loaded at a time.

  • Many common applications such as MP Navigator EX, My Image Garden, and IJ Scan Utility use the TWAIN driver (ScanGear).
  • Image Capture comes with your Macintosh OS.

Launching the scanner driver

When the scanner driver is launched, the above guide message may be displayed.

  • Select Yes to launch the TWAIN driver (ScanGear).
    • You will able to scan using MP Navigator EX, My Image Garden, IJ Scan Utility, or another TWAIN-enabled application.
    • You won't be able to scan using Image Capture because the ICA driver can't be launched.
  • Select No to keep the ICA driver for use with Image Capture.

Resetting the driver choice to allow Image Capture scanning

If you have selected Yes to launch the TWAIN driver, you won't be able to scan using Image Capture until you reset the scanner driver choice.

  1. Launch Image Capture.
  2. Go to File > Reset TWAIN devices.

  3. Choose ICA (not TWAIN).
  4. Scan using Image Capture.
