Description

This article explains what an APIPA is and how to try to fix it.

Solution

An APIPA, or Automatic Private IP Address, is a series of numbers that a device will assign itself when it is unable to communicate with a router's DHCP server.  An APIPA address will look like 169.254.xx.xx (where xx can be any number between 0 and 255).

This address will remain until the device can establish communication with the router again.

This can often be fixed by power cycling the router and the device in question.

Please note that any device that is connected to the network will lose its connection to the network until the router has completed its power cycle.

If power cycling the router and the device in question (printer, PC, mobile device, etc.) does not resolve the issue, there may be a problem with the router itself.  If this is the case, please contact your router manufacturer or network administrator.
