Description

Learn about the different types of memory cards you can use with your camera.

Solution

Compatible memory cards

You can use the following memory card types with your camera:
  • CF  (Type I, UDMA mode 7-compatible)
  • SD
  • SDHC (UHS-I cards)
  • SDXC (UHS-I cards)
  • MMC
  • MMCplus

Video considerations

Videos can take up a significant amount of storage space. The camera also needs to write to the card memory at a higher rate than when shooting still images.

Video recording format Read/write speed
ALL-I CF card - 30 MB/seconds or faster
SD card - 20 MB/seconds or faster
IPB (standard) CF card - 30 MB/seconds or faster
SD card - 20 MB/seconds or faster
IPB (light) CF card - 10 MB/seconds or faster
SD card - 4 MB/seconds or faster

Good to know

  • ALL-I and IPB are different modes of video compression. Both are h.264 videos output in .mov.
  • ALL-I is an intraframe method of video compression. File sizes are about three times larger than IPB but the quality is higher.
  • IPB uses interframe compression which provides a good balance of quality and reduced file size.
  • If you use a slow-writing card when shooting videos, it may not record properly. Also, if you play back a video from a card with a slow reading speed, the movie may not play back properly.
  • You need an even faster card if you want to shoot still photos while shooting a movie.
