About auto focus

Your camera, when equipped with a compatible lens, has an auto focus (AF) feature that allows the camera to focus on subjects without any manual focus. Auto focus is designed so a captured image looks in-focus when the image is printed out at full-size.

Tips for taking sharp and crisp images

Auto focus is focusing on a different part of the image than the one you want.
  • To avoid this, use auto focus on a different point of the subject.
  • Depending on the subject, you might get good results with manual focus.
Depth of field - A deeper depth of field can help avoid out of focus images. The depth of field is the range of the image that is in focus in front of and behind the point of focus.
Try making the aperture smaller or shortening the focal length.

Reduce camera shake to stop introducing blurred images.
For tips on preventing camera shake, refer to Prevent camera shake (Digital Single-Lens Reflex Camera) or Prevent camera shake (Interchangeable-Lens Compact System Camera).

Image post processing
  • Use a sharpening filter in post-processing. You can use computer software and adjust the sharpness and contrast of the image.
  • Computer software makes it easy to magnify and print just a small portion of the image. Avoid excessive magnification because when you magnify a portion of the image you also magnify any defects in the image.
