You can set the movie recording format, movie recording size (size, frame rate, compression method), and other functions. These formats allow you to decide on the level of quality and file size depending on the intended use of the video. For example, feature films require a higher bitrate than videos used in online training.

- OTE The frame rate displayed on the movie recording size screen depends on whether [ : Video system] is set to [For NTSC] or [For PAL].
Video recording size |
1920×1080 |
Full High-Definition (full HD) recording quality with a 16:9 aspect ratio. |
1280×720 |
High-Definition (HD) recording quality with a 16:9 aspect ratio. |
640×480 |
Standard-definition recording quality with a 4:3 aspect ratio. |
Frame rate (fps: frames per second) |
29.97fps / 59.94fps |
For areas where the TV format is NTSC (North America, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, etc.). |
25.00fps / 50.00fps |
For areas where the TV format is PAL (Europe, Russia, China, Australia, etc.). |
23.98fps / 24.00fps |
Mainly used for motion pictures. |
Compression method |
ALL-I (For editing/I-only) |
Compresses one frame at a time for recording. Although the file size is larger than with IPB (Standard) and IPB (Light), the movie is more suited for editing. |
IPB (Standard) |
Compresses multiple frames at a time efficiently for recording. Since the file size is smaller than with ALL-I (For editing), you can shoot longer (with the same card). |
IPB (Light) |
Selectable when the movie recording format is set to [MP4]. The movie is recorded at bit rate lower than with IPB (standard) resulting in a smaller file size and compatibility with a larger range of playback systems. Of the three methods available, this method allows the longest total possible movie shooting time on a card of a given capacity. |
Good to know
- Movies recorded at (59.94fps) or (50.00fps) may not be played back properly on other devices due to the heavy data processing load during playback.
- If (59.94 fps) or (50.00 fps) is set, some functions are not available:
- Movie servo AF is not functional
- Contrast-detection AF is applied. (Focusing may take longer than usual.)
- Still photos cannot be taken.
- If you change the [: Video system] setting, set the movie recording size again.
