Learn how to use a card reader or a card slot on a computer to download images

Solution

If your camera is not compatible with the operating system on your computer, you can use a card reader to download photos or movies shot with the camera. Some computers include a card slot.
  • Due to differences in the file systems used, not all memory cards are compatible with computers.
  • Some computers are unable to playback movies or display RAW images.

  1. Insert the memory card into the card slot on your computer or card reader connected to the computer.
  2. The computer should recognize the memory card as an external memory device. You can access the directory with Windows Explorer or Macintosh Finder.
  3. Images shot with the camera are saved in the memory card's [DCIM] folder with the following folder structure and file names.
    • The same folder structure is used for CF cards and SD cards in EOS 1D series and EOS 5D series cameras.
    • When you perform DPOF settings on the camera, a [MISC] folder is created. The files that manage the DPOF settings are saved in the [MISC] folder.
    • A thumbnail file is a file saved with the same file name as the movie and includes shooting information. When you play a movie with the camera, both the movie file and the thumbnail file are required.
    • When Adobe RGB is specified, the file names of images shot with your camera have an underscore "_" as the first character.
  4. Select and copy images to the destination directory. If you are copying the whole DCIM directory, you might need to rename it to avoid overwriting an existing directory.
  5. After the transfer is complete, check that the images you want are inside.
