Description

This article explains how to change the name of your printer when accessing its Remote UI.  This article also explains how you can change the name the printer broadcasts when you directly connect to it.

Solution

If you have more than one printer of the same model set up on a network, it can be difficult to know which printer will actually receive the print command when printing from a computer or mobile device on the network.  This article shows how you can change the name displayed by the printer when printing from a device on the network.

Note that this article contains steps for changing the printer name as well as the Bonjour service name.  You will also find information on changing the name of the printer when using it in Access Point Mode / Direct Connect Mode / Wireless Direct Mode.

Follow the steps below to change the printer's name through the Remote UI.
  1. Print a network configuration page (also known as a LAN details page) for your printer.

  2. From a web browser on a computer or mobile device, enter the printer's IPv4 address into the address bar.

NOTE: If you have your printer registered with Canon PRINT Inkjet / SELPHY on an iOS or Android device, you can access the Remote UI by tapping on the name of your printer at the bottom of the main screen, then tapping
    Printer Information.

  3. You may need to sign into your printer's Remote UI.  If this is required, click or tap Log in.  You may be required to enter a password for your printer.  Click here for more information.

  4. After signing into the Remote UI, click (or tap) on System info and LAN settings.  Then, click (or tap) on LAN settings.

  5. Click (or tap) Other settings.

  6. A message will be displayed indicating that LAN communication may be disabled depending on your environment.  Click (or tap) Yes.

  7. Click (or tap) Set printer name.

  8. You will then be prompted to specify a name for the printer.  Enter a name between 2 and 15 characters long, then click (or tap) OK.

The printer will process for a few moments.

After the printer has finished processing, the printer name (as identified on some networks) will be changed to what you specified.

If you are using an iOS device or a Mac and you want to print via AirPrint, you can change the Bonjour service name of the printer.  To change the Bonjour service name, follow the steps below.

  1. Print a network configuration page (also known as a LAN details page) for your printer.

  2. From a web browser on a computer or mobile device, enter the printer's IPv4 address into the address bar.

NOTE: If you have your printer registered with Canon PRINT Inkjet / SELPHY on an iOS or Android device, you can access the Remote UI by tapping on the name of your printer at the top of the main screen, then tapping Printer Information.

  3. You may need to sign into your printer's Remote UI.  If this is required, click or tap Log in.  You may be required to enter a password for your printer.  Click here for more information.

  4. After signing into the Remote UI, click (or tap) on AirPrint settings.

Enter a Bonjour service name for the printer.  You can have up to 48 alphanumeric characters for the Bonjour service name for the printer.  After you have typed in the name that you want, click (or tap) OK.  The printer will process for a few moments.  When it has finished processing, the Bonjour service name change has completed.  When you attempt to print from an iOS device (or if you want to add the printer on a Mac), the printer will be identified by the Bonjour service name specified.

For some models, you can also change the password used to connect devices directly to the printer wirelessly.  Follow the steps below to change the password.

 Important
  • Not all models will allow you to specify a password.  The steps below are from the PIXMA TS9120.  Some options on your model may be differently or may not be present at all.

  1. After signing into the Remote UI, click or tap on System info and LAN settings.

  2. Click or tap on LAN settings.

  3. Click or tap Wireless Direct.

  4. When prompted, click or tap Yes.

  5. Click or tap Change password.

  6. Click or tap on the box for Password and change the name as desired.

  7. Click or tap OK.  The password will be changed.

Any devices that are directly connected wirelessly to the printer will be disconnected.  They will need to be reconnected to the printer with the new password that you specified.
