Setting up a Windows PC with no DVD-ROM Drive to Use the Printer Wirelessly - MX922

Description

If your Windows PC does not have a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive, this article will help you in setting up the computer to work with your PIXMA MX922 wirelessly.

Solution

If your Windows PC does not have a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive, you can download drivers and software from the Canon USA website to set up the computer to work with your PIXMA MX922 wirelessly.  Follow the steps below to connect your printer to a wireless network.  Then, you will need to download the necessary drivers and software for your Windows PC to work with the printer.

 Note

  1. Press the Menu button on the printer.
     
  2. Use the arrow keys to highlight WLAN setup.  Then, press OK.

  3. The printer will begin to search for nearby networks.

  4. When the following screen appears, Standard setup it highlighted by default.  Press OK.

    Note:  If a WPS-enabled wireless router is nearby, a message will appear on the screen telling you to press the WPS button on the router, then the OK button on the printer.  If you do not want to connect to that WPS-enabled router, press the Stop button on the printer to bypass this message.
       
  5. The printer will search for nearby networks.  After it has finished searching, a list of nearby networks will appear on the screen.  Use the up and down arrow keys to select your network from the list.  Once you have highlighted your network, press OK.

  6. If your wireless router has a password, you will come to the Enter passphrase screen.

  7. Press OK to proceed to the character entry screen.
     
    Note:  If your wireless network does NOT have a password, the printer will attempt to connect to the network automatically.  When it connects, press OK.
       
  8. On the character entry screen, use the arrows and the OK button to enter in the characters for your wireless network's password.

    Note:
    • By default, lower case letters will be on the screen.  If you need to switch to upper case letters or numbers and symbols, press the middle Function button below the screen.
    • Pressing the middle Function button (below Aa1) switches the character set to upper case letters.
    • Pressing the middle Function button a second time will change over to numbers and symbols.
    • While entering in the password, if you make a mistake, you can press the right Function button (below Del. character) to delete the incorrect characters.
    • Refer to Understand entering numbers, letters, and symbols for more information.
       
  9. After entering in the password, press the left Function button (under Done).

  10. You will be back at the Enter passphrase screen.  The password you entered in will be shown on the screen.  If you need to make any corrections to the password, press OK and you will be able to make any corrections needed.  If no corrections are needed, press the left Function key (under End setup).

  11. The printer will attempt to connect to the network.

  12. When the printer connects to the network, press OK.

  13. If the printer fails to connect to the wireless network:
     
    1. Press OK and verify that the password you have entered is correct.  
    2. Make any changes if necessary.  
    3. If the password is correct, try unplugging the router for 15 seconds.  Plug it back in.  After it re-initializes, try to connect the printer to the network again.

Downloading and Installing the Software


After your printer has been connected to the network, the drivers and software need to be downloaded and installed.  Follow the steps below to download and install the necessary drivers and software.
 
  1. Click here to go to the PIXMA MX922 support page.  The version of Windows installed on your computer will be automatically detected.  If the website does not detect which version is installed on your computer, select it from the Operating System drop down menu.
     
  2. In the Drivers section of Drivers & Downloads, you will need to download and install the MX920 Series MP Driver (this includes the Canon IJ Scan Utility).



    Click the Select button to the right of the MP Drivers.  Then, click Download.  If you are prompted to Run or Save the file, save it to your computer.

    NOTE: The XPS driver is not required.  If you wish to install it, you must have the MP Drivers installed first.
     
  3. After downloading the MP Drivers, double click the file to open it.



    NOTE: If you receive a prompt asking for permission to run the file after you double click it, click the appropriate affirmative option (YesContinue, etc.).
     
  4. When the driver installer begins, click Next.


     
  5. Select your place of residence.  Then, click Next.


     
  6. Read through the License Agreement.  Click Yes to continue.  If you click No, the drivers will not be installed.



    The driver installation will begin.


     
  7. When the Connection method window appears, select Use the printer with wireless LAN connection.  Then, click Next.



    The installer will search for the printer on the network.


     
  8. The Detected Printers List window will appear.  Click on your printer in the window to highlight it.  Then, click Next.



    NOTE: If your printer is not detected, click here.

    The driver installation will continue.


     
  9. The Setup Completion window will appear.  Click Complete to close the installer.


     
The printer is now ready for use from your Windows PC.



What if my printer is not detected on the network?


If your printer is not detected during the installation process, check the following:
  • Make sure that your computer and your printer are connected to the same network.

    Click the appropriate Network icon in the system tray
     
    Windows XP:  Windows Vista:  Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10: 

    Note the SSID name (Network name).

    If your PC is not on the correct network, select your network and connect the PC to it.
     
  • If you have a firewall enabled, you may need to temporarily disable the firewall so that the computer can find the printer during the installation.  If you do not want to disable your firewall, there are exceptions that need to be added to the firewall.  Click here for a list of ports and applications to add as exceptions to your firewall.  Please contact your firewall vendor for instructions on adding these exceptions.
