You can forward scans to your computer right from the operation panel of your printer.
Before you begin
If you have Windows, the printer drivers must be installed from the Setup CD or you can install them from the Canon website.
When you scan via a network connection, the printer and computer must be connected.
The destination and the file name need to be specified in Canon IJ Scan Utility (Windows) / Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite (macOS
®).
Scan to the computer

Turn the printer ON.

Load originals on the scanner glass or in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder).

Tap Scan. If you forward the scanned data to a computer for the first time, the Scan menu screen displays. Go to step 4.
- If you forwarded the scanned data to a computer, the Scan standby screen displays as shown below.
- If you change the destination or scan settings, tap Menu/Wireless connect, then go to step 4.
- Go to step 9 if you don't need to change the destination or scan settings.
- Select Save to, then tapOK.
- Select a computer where you want to forward scanned data, then tap OK.
- If you forward the data to the USB-connected computer, select Local (USB).
- If you forward the data to the LAN-connected computer, select a name of the computer to forward the scanned data.
- If you select Search again and press the OK button, the printer searches for the connected computers again.

Select Document type, then tap OK.

Select the type of the originals, then tap OK.
Auto scan
The printer detects the type of the originals automatically and the image forwards in the optimized size, resolution and data format.
Load originals properly according to their type; otherwise, some originals may not scan properly.
- The following items can't be scanned properly:
- A4 sized photos
- Documents smaller than 5 inches x 7 inches (127 mm x 178 mm) such as a paperback with its backbone cut off
- Originals on thin white paper
- Long and narrow originals such as panoramic photographs
When you scan originals from the ADF, it may take longer to scan the first page.
Document - Scans the original on the platen or in the ADF applying the optimized settings for scanning a document.
Photo - Scans the original on the platen as a photo data applying the optimized settings for scanning a photo.
The (asterisk) on the LCD indicates the current setting.
- Specify each scan setting in order.
- Use the Left or Right arrow to select a setting item, then tap OK.
- Use the Left or Right arrow to adjust each setting item, then tap OK. The next setting item is displayed.
- For details on each setting item:
- The Scan standby screen is displayed after all the settings have been specified.
- When you select Auto scan for Document type, the Scan standby screen displays without setting items.

Select Color for color scanning, or Black for black & white scanning.
If the original isn't loaded properly, a message displays on the screen. Load the original on the scanner glass or in the document feeder according to the scan settings.
- If you load the original in the ADF:
- The printer starts the scan and the scanned data forwards to the computer.
- If you load the original on the scanner glass:
- When you select JPEG or TIFF for Data format, the printer starts the scan and the scanned data forwards to the computer.
- When you select PDF or Compact PDF for Data format, the confirmation screen asks you if you want continue scanning when the first scan completes.
- Select Yes and tap OK to scan the originals continuously. Load the next document on the platen and start the scan.
- If you select No and tap OK, scanning completes and the data forwards to the computer in one PDF file.
Scanned data forwards to the computer according to the settings specified in Canon IJ Scan Utility/Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.
- Remove the original after scanning completes.
If the
Auto scan result isn't satisfactory, select
Document or
Photo according to the original in step 7, then specify the scan size or other setting items in step 8.
- You can use the following scan method:
- Scan with a WIA-compliant application software (Windows)
- Convert a scanned document to text (OCR)
- Forward the scanned data to the computer using WSD (one of the network protocols supported in Windows)
- When selecting a computer searched using WSD as the transfer destination, Document type and the scan setting items are not displayed.
- Also in step 9, press Color button even for monochrome originals.
- WSD scan from this device
- When using Windows, the program selection screen may be displayed after pressing the Color or Black button.
- In this case, select Canon IJ Scan Utility and tap OK.
