Adjusting the Focus  XF705

Solution

The camcorder offers the following ways to focus and incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology for advanced autofocus performance. You can also adjust the focus remotely using Browser Remote on a connected network device.

Manual focus: Turn the focus ring on the lens to adjust the focus. The camcorder offers several focus assistance functions to help you focus more accurately when using the manual focus.

Push AF: While using manual focus, or autofocus at slower adjustment speeds, you can have the camcorder focus automatically at the highest possible speed ([AF Speed] and [AF Response] both set to [High]) as long as you hold the PUSH AF button pressed down.

AF-boosted MF: Focus manually most of the way and let the camcorder finish focusing automatically.

Continuous AF: The camcorder keeps focusing automatically at all times.

Face AF: The camcorder automatically detects a person’s face, focuses on it and can track it if that person moves.

Tracking: After you select a subject, the camcorder keeps focusing it and tracks the subject if it moves.

Operating modes:

Manual Focus
Focus manually using the focus ring on the lens.
1 Set the FOCUS switch to M.
  • appears on the left of the screen.
2 Turn the focus ring to adjust the focus.
  • Focusing speed will depend on how fast you turn the ring.

NOTES
  • • You can use the focus ring to adjust the focus while you are operating the zoom. If the camcorder was initially in autofocus mode, it will return to autofocus mode after you adjust the focus manually.
  • • You can change the direction of the adjustment and the sensitivity of the response of the focus ring using the MENU  and [Focus Ring Response] settings.
  • • If you operate the zoom after focusing, the focus on the subject may be lost.
  • • If you focus manually and then leave the camcorder with the power turned on, the focus on the subject may be lost after a while. This possible slight shift in focus is a result of the internal temperature rising in the camcorder and lens. Check the focus before resuming shooting.
  • • When an optional RC-V100 Remote Controller is connected to the camcorder, you can adjust the focus with the remote controller’s FOCUS dial. At default settings, turn the dial right to focus farther and left to focus nearer.
  • • You can operate the focus ring even when the camcorder's controls are locked

Using the Focus Assistance Functions
In order to focus more accurately, you can use the following focus assistance functions: Dual Pixel Focus Guide, an onscreen guide that shows you if the picture is in focus; peaking, which creates a clearer contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject; and magnification, which enlarges the image on the screen. You can use peaking and the focus guide or peaking and magnification simultaneously for greater effect.

Dual Pixel Focus Guide
The focus guide gives you an intuitive visual indication of the current focus distance and the direction and amount of adjustment necessary to bring the picture into full focus. When used in combination with face detection, the guide will focus on the vicinity of the eyes of the person detected as the main subject.

1 Select [Focus Guide].

2 Select [On] and then press SET.
3 If necessary, move the focus guide frame using the joystick or by touching the point where you want to focus
on the LCD screen.
  • Press the CANCEL button to return the focus guide to the center of the screen.

NOTES
• When the focus guide frame turns green, the subject is correctly focused.
• When the aperture is adjusted automatically, it may take a moment until the focus guide frame's response stabilizes after operating the zoom.
• With subjects or in situations where autofocus may not work well, the focus guide may not work correctly.
• The Dual Pixel Focus Guide function cannot be used in the following cases:
- While the focus is being adjusted automatically using AF-boosted MF or continuous AF.
- When you close the aperture beyond F11.
- When  is set to an option other than [Off].
- When is set to [Tele-converter 6.0x] or [Tele-converter 3.0x], or to [Digital 300x] and the zoom ratio is in the digital zoom range.
- While the color bars are displayed.
- When the [Gamma] setting in the custom picture file is set to [PQ] or [HLG].
- When infrared recording is activated.
• When the Dual Pixel Focus Guide function is used together with face detection or tracking, the focus guide may not focus the main subject’s eyes correctly, depending on the direction in which the face is turned.
• If you set an assignable button to [Focus Guide], you can press the button to turn the focus guide function on and off.
