Description

This article provides information on what to check if you experience a Cannot communicate with scanner error when attempting to scan with the PIXMA MX922.

Solution

If you receive a Cannot communicate with scanner error when attempting to scan with your PIXMA MX922, check the following.

  1. If you're using the MX922 via USB, make sure that both ends of the USB cable are connected (one end in the computer, the other into the printer).

  2. If you're using the MX922 on a network, make sure that the printer shows that its connection is active. You can do this by printing a network configuration page.

If your computer connects to your network wirelessly, make sure that it's connected to the same network that the printer is connected to. You can do this from a Windows PC or a Mac.

  3. If you're using the MX922 on a Windows PC, make sure that you have the scanner driver installed. To do this, press and hold the Windows Windows logo key and type R. In the Run box that appears, type twain_32 and click OK.

The MX920 series will appear in the twain_32 window.

If you're using the MX922 on a network, you'll see a second MX920 series folder in this window.

  4. If you're using the MX922 on a Mac, make sure that you have the TWAIN (scanner) driver installed. To do this, go to the Finder and navigate to \ Macintosh HD \ Library \ Image Capture \ TWAIN Data Sources

    Figure: TWAIN Data Sources

If the TWAIN driver is installed, you'll see two files for the MX922. The MX920 series.ds file is the USB scanner driver. The MX920 series Network.ds file is the network scanner driver, used when the printer is connected to a network via ethernet or Wi-Fi.

If these drivers are not installed, they can be downloaded from our website.

  5. If you're using the MX922 on a network, make sure that you have the network scanner selected in IJ Scan Utility.

Be sure to choose the network listing for the MX922 if you're using it on a network

If the regular MX920 series listing is chosen (shown with a check next to its name in the image above), the computer will attempt to communicate with the printer via USB instead of across the network.

  6. If you're using the MX922 wirelessly, make sure that the printer's signal strength is 80% or higher. Low signal strength can cause communication issues. To see the signal strength, print a network configuration page. If the signal strength is low, try to move the printer closer to the router. Also, try to move or turn off other devices that may affect the printer's signal.
