Description
When one or more of the printer’s ink tanks has been identified as having reached the lower limit line on the ink tank, the 1643 support code will appear on your printer. To scan when the printer is in that condition, you should (1) add ink to each ink tank that has reached the lower limit line and then close the printer’s cover, or (2) press the Stop button on the printer, or (3) scan from an external device such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet.
Solution
Scan When the 1643 Support Code Appears on the Printer
If you wish to scan when your printer has detected that one or more of its ink tanks has reached the lower limit line and the 1643 support code has appeared on your printer, you should take one of the following steps:
- Refill each ink tank identified by the printer as having reached the lower limit line with the corresponding color of ink until the ink level reaches the single dot shown on the ink tank and then close the printer’s cover;[1]
or
- Press the Stop button on the printer if you intend to scan by using the operation panel on the printer;
or
- Scan from an external device such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet using the corresponding application software.
If you encounter difficulty scanning after performing step 2, please verify that the firmware updates available on the Canon website have been downloaded to your printer.

[1] Some ink will remain in the ink tank when the printer indicates that you should refill the ink tank. The estimated page yields of the ink bottles do not include this remaining ink.
Refilling the ink tank until the ink level reaches the single dot shown on the ink tank will improve the accuracy of detection of the remaining ink level.
