Answer

 SmartWorks MFP can scan to an SMB shared scan folder. To keep the SMB username and password secure, SmartWorks MFP User Accounts must be enabled to use the SMB protocol.

Note: The following example shows how to create and test a simple SMB shared folder on a network PC, then configure SmartWorks MFP on the system controller to scan to that folder. This document is not intended as extensive training on the SMB communication protocol, but provide a simple means to test the basic functionality.

SMB Protocol

Configure a network PC to create an SMB shared scan folder.

On the network PC:
  1. Preparation
    1. Create a user with a password that SmartWorks MFP can use to access the SMB share.
      E.g. username=test, password=test
    2. Create a folder on the PC you wish to share to receive scans.
      E.g. C:\Scanshare
    3. Right click the Windows Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "ipconfig" and record the IP address of the PC.
      E.g. IP address = 192.168.1.226
       
  2. Allow the PC and the folder to be discovered on the network.
    1. Open the Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center. Select "Change advanced sharing settings".

    2. Turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing in the "(current profile)"

  3. Share the folder.
    1. Right click on the folder as 1b and select Properties. Select the Sharing tab and click Share.

    2. Enter the username (created in step1a) and click Add.

    3. Make sure the user has Read/Write access and click Share.
      Ensure use has Read/Write access and click Share.
    4. The folder is now shared. Click Done.

  4. Set the security of the folder.
    1. Right click on the folder (created in Step 1b) and select Properties. Select the Security tab. Select the user and make sure that user has full control.
      Make sure user has Full Control.
       
On the System Controller, configure a SmarkWorks MFP User's Scan folder to the SMB folder.
  1. Log in as Administrator and add a user with a username and password of your choice. These user details do not need to match those used elsewhere.
    E.g. username = smb, password = smb.
     
  2. Set the User's Scan folder to match the SMB server's address.
    E.g. \\192.168.1.226\
    If configured correctly, the "Test Network Connection" button will response with  a "Passed" message.

  3. Log in to SmartWorks MFP as the user created in Step 6 above and you will see the folder is pointing to the SMB shared folder.
    Folder should be pointing to the created SMB shared folder.
     
  4. Scan files saved in this SMB shared folder can be accessed across the network using Windows Explorer, but you will need to enter the username and password (as created in Step 1a above).
    Username and password will be required to access the shared SMB folder via Windows Explorer.
